So, we returned to Queenstown in search of more adventure. We started the week by riding the world's first jet boat on the Shotover river... strangely it was called the Shotover Jet! It was really fun. The drivers were maniacs, they drive you through canyons at 80kph within inches of huge rocks then finish it off with a 360. After that they turn around calmly and ask how your holiday is going!
The next couple of days we visited the small towns of Glenorchy and Arrowtown - they were both really nice. There was an old Chinese settlement which had been restored in Arrowtown. The Chinese came here for the big gold rush in the late 1800's. It was really interesting reading about the history of the area.
Jo already having done a bungy jump before and myself not bothered what I jump off, we decided on the Canyon Swing. It was 109m tall and with a 60m freefall was just like a bungy apart from you swung at the bottom instead of bouncing. The best bit was you could jump in any number of ways... I opted for the 'Indian Rope Trick' for my first jump. They suspended me out over the canyon, pulled the release trigger, leaving me holding onto a rope for dear life. My grip was slipping then the jumpmasters decided to shout "the ropes broken" which didn't help. But I couldn't hold on any longer and fell. It was awesome fun... so I did another. It was called 'The Chair'. I had to rock back on my chair (like they used to tell me not to do in school) at the edge of the platform eventually (3 secs) losing my balance and falling for another great scary jump.
Jo was up next and chose to do the 'Backwards' jump first. Not as easy as it sounds. To put it in perspective, all the jumps have 's*** your pants' ratings from 1 to 5 - this one scoring a fully loaded 5! Next up another grade 5 jump, called 'Gimp boy goes to Hollywood'. For this one they suspened you upside down whilst anxiously waiting to be released. All Jo remembered after that was plummeting down towards the rocks below before the swing kicked in. One guy said after his swing 'even my s*** was scared'...we couldn't have put it better ourselves.
