We spent our first night in Fiji in Nadi ready for our transfer to the Yasawas Islands the next day. Our first stop was South Sea Island, only half an hour from the mainland. It was the smallest island we visited - we walked around it in 5 minutes! The food was quite nice there and the nightly entertainment was crab racing which was good fun.
After a couple of days on South Sea Island we went on a sailing trip around the Mamanuca Islands and stood on the beach where Tom Hanks was washed up in 'Castaway'. We were also accepted into a small village during a traditional Kava Ceremony, it was nice to see but a bit staged as they expect 30 tourists everyday.
Our next stop was Waya Lai Lai. Unlike some of the resorts this was run by local villagers who were genuinely pleased to see you. We did a walk to the summit and watched the sunset. That night the staff and the villagers put on a huge dinner with lots of traditional dancing and singing finishing with lots of Kava. It was one of our best nights in Fiji.
Our third resort was Sanawai Resort on Yaqeta. This was a tiny resort with only five of us there on the second night. This was a bonus though as the chef cooked us lobster, which I doubt he would have for 20 people. A few of us decided to walk to a nearby village on the other side of the island. On the way back we were invited in to one of the villagers homes to to have tea with him. It was really interesting talking to him about Fiji and their current situation. He invited us to stay with him the next time we came to Fiji.
We then went to our most northerly resort in the Yasawas group, Sunrise. A twenty minute walk over the island brought us to Blue Lagoon where the movie was filmed with Brooke Shields - it was really pretty. Our entertainment was our host, Queen, a middle aged man. He/she was really funny and had some great stories. Whilst we were there we went on a trip to Sawa-i-lau caves which was great.
From Sunrise we joined the Wanna Taki cruise for two drink fuelled nights. We had a really good group and played drinking games to the early hours. We recovered on Manta Ray Island for two nights. We had heard from people that had stayed there how good the food was, and it definately lived up to expectations - we pigged out!
Our last stop was Korovou Eco Haven for one night. We found a really nice deserted beach on the other side of the island where we chilled out before we got the flyer back to Nadi. That night we went out for pizza with a few people we'd met and been with for the last week.
All the islands we visited were different but the villagers and staff on each island were so friendly and welcoming. We had a brilliant time and made some really good friends along the way.
