We spent a nice few days with Matt's cousins in Christchurch. It was?great to catch up with them as it has been a few years since Matt last saw them. They looked after us well and even cooked us a really nice homemade roast on Sunday!
From Christchurch we headed to Lake Tekapo where we saw the church of the good shepherd beside the lake - the weather was perfect and we could see Mt Cook (NZ's highest mountain)?in the distance. With the weather being so nice it seemed like a great opportunity to jump out of a plane so we went to the home of adrenaline sports, Queenstown. The next morning we went to see my friend Georgie who just so happened to be in Queenstown for?a wedding that week. It was really nice seeing her before she had to catch her flight out of NZ...we had a flight of our own to catch!
After signing our life away yet again we arrived at the drop zone. We were kitted out and met our instructors (Matt was pleased to see he had the chief instructor with over 12,000 jumps) and cameramen?before being?squeezed into the tiny plane. It was a good flight up to 12,000ft and only took 10 minutes which helped the nerves as some planes take up to 45 minutes. The door flew open and Matt was first to dangle his feet out of the plane before being quickly thrown out by his instructor. I followed shortly afterwards.
It was such a rush when we left the plane with a freefall of 45 seconds. 8,000ft later our parachutes opened...this gave us a chance to enjoy the views. It was a wicked thrill and so glad we did it.
The next morning we got the gondola up to Bob's peak which has great views over Queenstown. From there we got the chairlift up a bit further to do the not so adventurous luge. It was good fun...Matt leads 2-1 in the drivers championship.
That afternoon we were on the road again to Milford Sound ready for our boat cruise the next day. After another cold night we woke up to more sunshine ?and drove the final few miles to the boat terminal. We spent 2 hours on the water which took in the amazing mountains, waterfalls and wildlife. It is such a beautiful place and well worth the long trip out there.
We are now driving the south of the South Island so will update you all again soon.
