Hey everyone
Yet another Blog, they are coming at you thick and fast since we have been in New Zealand! Hope you are enjoying them.
So we left you last in Queenstown.....
February 2nd 2009
Today we got ready to leave Queenstown, as much as we love this place we really have to leave before we spend anymore money. There is way too much stuff to do here - especially thrill seeking stuff like bunjy jumping, whitewater rafting and river rafting. Plus camping is sooo expensive!
After meeting up with Darrell last night we decided to head to Glenorchy as everyone has told us it is really nice. So we gave Darrell and text and he was going to join us for the day as he didn't have work. So we picked him up so he could show us the way. It was only a short drive about 48k each way. It was a tiny little town but very picturesque with a lake and snowy mountains. We chilled out there for a few hours and took lots of pics and sampled some cider at the local pub before heading back to Queenstown. When we got back Darrell had asked his mate if he could get us any discount on a sky dive. He said yes so we headed straight to Global Gossip in town to book it. So we were booked in to do a 15,000ft sky dive (the biggest one you can do in New Zealand, with a 60 second free fall) for tomorrow afternoon at 2pm!!!
We then got on our way to Lake Wanaka. Darrell decided to join us aswell so he lead the way taking us through the Crown Range. It was very steep and windy but the views were stunning. We got to Lake Wanaka which is just like a slightly smaller Queenstown. We found the cheapest campsite and checked in! In the evening we chilled out with a few beers and made lots of jokes about it being our last night as we started to get a bit nervous about throwing ourselves out of a plane! Ed and Sara seemed just as bad and they had already done a 14,000ft one in Oz!
February 3rd
The next day we woke up and the sky was as grey and as cloudy as you could possibly imagine - so straight away we all thought that the sky dive would be cancelled! We rang them as soon as we were ready just to check but they said it was too early to tell and to call back at 1:30pm. So we had to do something to occupy ourselves so we weren't all thinking about it. We headed to a place called 'Have a Shot' it was quite cool they had a driving range, clay pigeon shooting, archery, cropool, rifle shooting and mini golf. We had a go at 'Cropool' the strangest game in the world. Its basically a giant pool table but you have a croquet mallet annd you have to pot the balls in the pockets just like pool. It is the hardest game though and took us half an hour just to have one! Ed and Sara won in the end as i potted the black ball in an impressive shot from one corner to the other! We then headed to the driving range to hit some balls. The guys also had a go at getting a whole in one in the jackpot hole to win $671 - no one was that lucky though.
Soon enough it was 1:30pm so wwe rang the sky diving place and they said it would definitely be on as the weather was now clear but still with a few clouds. We headed to the airport as we were all starting to get very nervous at this point. When we got there we had to sit down and watch a film - it was very short and didn't really explain alot considering we were about to chuck ourselves out of a plane. We then had to sign a disclaimer form which was horrible to read, telling you all the things that could go wrong and tthen having to sign to say you wouldn't sue them and they weren't liable. Before we knew it, it was time to suit up. Oh yes the jumpsuits were like giant clown suits, multicoloured and not very flattering. Mine was about ten sizes too big for me and kept inflating in the wind!lol
Ed and Sara suggested we go first as it was our first time - very nice of them i though as i was really thinking i was about to die. We then got harnessed and met our instructor and cameera guy. Mine were really nice i had a kiwi guy called chris who i was strapped to and Adam was my Camera guy (evern though his camera skills turned out not to be too great - mainly the photos). Matt had some foreign guys but they seemed nice. We had a short interview - which was highly embarrassing! Then we were in the plane. Everything happens so quickly you don't really have time to think about it. It took about 10 minutes to fly up to 15,000ft, the views on the way up were so good! The before we knew it i see the first guy sat on the platform - then he just fell out! This was when i really started to get nervous. Then next thing you know Matt is sat on the edge and just jumps off aswell! Was so crazy seeing someone just fall out of a plane. Then it was my go, they tell you to put your legs over the edge then you tilt your head back tuck yopur legs in then he just throws you and him out! I screamed my head off for the first 20 seconds i think. It is actually pretty hard to scream for a long time when you are so high up it is minus 5 and your cheeks are getting blown off the side of your face. Was the most surreal experience. Its a massive adrenalin rush but then is really relaxing at the same time. Its completely different feeling to the canyon swing that was more 'oh my god im about to die' where as this was just quite peaceful. After 60 seconds of freefall he pulls the chute which gives you a big yank up then you just soar down to earth. The views are unbelievable and it feels like you are floating. Just before you touch down they tell you to lift your legs - i found i couldn't though as my harness was really low down round by my knees so i kind of just fell over at the end with him on top of me!!Not very ladylike....like i ever am! Matt came running over to me and we were just both buzzing! The camera guy is trying to interview you though and i just sound like i didn't really enjoy it - i loved it it was amazing i just was so freaked out and it just felt like it didn't really happen. We both agree that it is the best thing ever though and highly recommend it. If money was no factor i would have definitely have gone up and done another one straight away.
We have DVD's each and lots of photos so we shall put some on in a bit! Then you can see how cool we looked in our clown suits and funny hats falling through the air.
Now we are just back at the campsite and have been laughing at our DVD's and photos (most of mine im not even in them its just alot of sky - there are a few good ones though).
So that is about all the exciting stuff done for now - so mum you can stop panicking about my spinal cord and any other injuries. The only thing left that we might do is some zorbing and whit water rafting in Roturua on the North Island. Next stop tomorrow is some Golfcross - a weird golf game but the balls are shaped like rugby balls and then we are off to the Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier on the west coast.
Hope you are all well - lots of love x x x
