Today was to be an easy day, just cruise around and check out a few things.
After breaky we headed down the road to the Mardugal Billabong Walk. We set off on the 1km return walk that followed the edge of the billabong. I was pretty much crapping myself the whole way. These crocs have put the fear of death in me l tell you. We got to the picnic area at the South Alligator River mouth where Marty proceeded to go and stand near the edge to search for crocs! Can you believe it?? After nagging he got the hint at my nervousness and moved back. With no crocs that we could see we headed back to the car.
Next stop we pulled into Yellow Water and made our way out to the Wetlands Boardwalk. The walk was only short but brilliant. It gave us good views of the birdlife and floodplain. We saw this beautiful brolga bird, such long legs! Boo was a tad emotional, cracking the poops a little over nothing so we decided to head back to the car and have some lunch.
On the way back to camp we called into Warradjan Aboriginal Culture Centre. It was probably the highlight of the day for me. The center was in a circular design that represents the shape of a warradjan (pig nosed turtle). The center was developed by the Bininj and Mungguy people of Kakadu and gave us an insight into their culture and beliefs. The displays were great, there was photos, art and weapons just to name a few things. In the background was the sounds of their music and singing. It was an awesome place to gain insight into the history of Kakadu and the Bininj people, fantastic!! Girls loved it and was great to see how Boo recalled some of the stuff she learnt at the ranger talk last night.
On the way back to camp Marty thought it would be a great idea to pull off onto the Jim Jim Billabong road. So everything was cool until we came up to a murky semi deep water crossing. Now usually we would get out and walk through to check for depth, but in this country you can get stuffed with that idea!! So again, l shat myself as Marty drive through the water. Thank god we got through, well really it wasn't that bad, it had a stoney bottom and not too deep, only up to the tip of the tyres. It was the murky dark water to the sides of the crossing l was scared about, it looks exactly where a croc would want up call home. Anyway, we got through and a little up the road we came to an even darker, deeper water crossing that had a bit of a flow to it. You guessed right, Marty for out to check it out!! Bloody idiot reckon, but after my nagging he got back in the car and drive through. There was a bit of a bowe wave made from us crossing through the water, think Marty said it came up to the bullbar. So as you would expect, this was Marty and the girls highlight of the day. To the extent that we came out to the highway where Marty turned around and did the water crossings all again, the girls screaming with excitement through every one!
After this thrilling time we headed back to camp for a few hours chill out time. In late arvo we headed out to Nawurlandja to do a lookout walk with ranger Melissa. It was another free ranger activity provided by the park and this time ended up quite intimate as it was just us and the ranger. No one else had turned up. So we headed up the 600m climb of the rocky slope being informed along the way about the trees snd ways if aboriginal life by Melissa. We reached the top and were greeted with spectacular views of the escarpment,Nourlangie and Angbangbang Billabong. It was do quiet and peaceful, to some extent, as the girls ran around a little. We all sat down watching the sunset and taking in the serenity! The color changes of Nourlangie was amazing. The cliff face turned from a yellowy sandstone color to a vibrant crimson color as the sunset more, absolutely breathtaking!!! Melissa gave us a great insight into the country and culture, was definitely worth it. Got some great pics too!!!
It was late, so leftovers for tea it was followed by an early night. It was meant to be an easy day but we seemed to fill it in quite well. Marty and l relaxed once the girls had gone to sleep with our viewing if Big Bang Theory. Doesn't matter how many times we watch these episodes, which l think in this trip it has been a total if three now, we still crack up. Is our favorite past time when we don't have tv reception. Great to end a great day with a belly full of laughs!!!
