The hike up out of the Cobungra is one I do not have fond memories of. Last time I undertook this climb every 15-20 steps I emptied the contents of my stomach. I'm still not sure what caused it, I suspect the water at the hut, but needless to say it was not an enjoyable walk
That was 12 years ago...today I feel good! The climb does not seem at all as I remember it. You would not be shocked to read it seemed much easier this time. As you can see from the photo accompanying, the walk was very beautiful in sections with wildflowers proliferating right the way up the spur.
We reached the delightfully restored Derrick's Hut in great time and paused before the push to Mt Loch carpark at Mt Hotham. As you gain the ridge near the ski area known as The Orchard, Mt Hotham Village appears starkly in front of you. It is an odd and confronting sight, having only seen tiny alpine huts for days. It would be our destination, and even if it was a bit of an eyesore a pub lunch awaited!! We pushed on with the promise of cold beer and food I didn't have to cook!
Needless to say, once we arrived at Mt Hotham I had only one thing on my mind. We enjoyed a fantastic meal at the General. After lunch, however the very sad task of saying goodbye to Sal and her family was undertaken. I feel very blessed to have such support.
Mum and I headed towards Mt St Bernard where she would drop me, however there was no shade and I needed to sort out some gear and my fooddrop. We continued down the hill a little way and spent a couple of lovely hours together, sorting food, logistics and gear. Mum finally dropped me off at about 5 which was also very hard. I was emotional to receive so much support from my family, wife and her family, as well as all the well-wishers on this blog. I would continue the journey on my own from here and parting was truly sweet sorrow.
