Swakopmund had big dunes but the national park had bigger ones. If you did not think it could get better! We were heading for one of two Mecca's for photographers Dead Veil. The scenery on the way was outstanding, you would not believe the unearthly colours used here white, bright yellow, orange and red and this is before the dunes. As the dunes appeared lonesome trees framed themselves, whoever created this place knew something about photography. Lonely planet said that Namibia was the photographers dream - and it is.
We had a guide to take us through the desert. This man was like the Crocodile Dundee of Namibia. He once spent 7 days trekking through the desert to reach the sea. It was fascinating how he could spot the spiders that used hinged doors to burrow in the sand.
Dead Veil was amazing, brilliant white and flat valley, dead skeletal trees and orange and red sand dunes rising steeply on all sides. The other serious photographer Mat almost cried when we were given 15 minutes in one of two places in the world that he wanted to visit.
Dune 45 was on the agenda for sunset. Red does not describe this dune at sunset - it was weird.
An un expected upgrade from camping in the wilds meant that we had a restaurant and bar that night. This place had a Pandora's box gimmick. When some curious person opened this box in the toilets you were met with a dirty lady picture. In this box was a cord with do not pull written on it. An alarm on one of the old cars (inside the restaurant) was the sign that the cord had been pulled. The person coming out of the toilets then got a cheer!
