We got on the bus heading north to Puerto Natales and the mountains of Patagonia. As you can see from the blog picture the flat countryside around Punta Arenas looks more like the moors of Scotland or even Siberia than the granite monoliths that you normally see in pictures of Patagonia.
There are things we wanted to do down here but we have to head back this way so it makes sense to do these last. The countryside is what I wanted, you get the sence that you are at the end of the world, a very lonely looking place.
Travelling on a bit further from the flat area where the picture was taken you start seeing hills forming. This area does look a lot like the moors of northern England. A rise in the road gave way to a vast plain fringed by a chain of snow capped mountains now we were in South America. This is the very start of the longest continental mountain range in the world, the mighty Andes. Not so long ago in Caracas we were swimming under it's other extremity. The scenery is haunting in it's beauty especially when listening to composed music.
Liz has unfortunetly hurt her back this morning, I feel for her I know what it is like. We might have to stay longer in Puerto Nateles as it is from here we do a five to seven day trek in the mountains - a major trip highlight.
I went down to the sound to have a look around. I know that time is running out on our trip so I want to do as much as possible before it is too late. I actually phoned up BA to put back our flight home to 10th Feb.
