It seems Santiago airport has a novel way of storing the bags before being loaded onto the plane!
We watched the people boarding the plane, we could only see two kids so felt optimistic on having a kid free flight. However getting onto the plane I had one of the little blighters kicking my seat from behind - typical.
Punta Arenas is the most southerly city in the world, sitting on the Straits of Magellan that separate it from Terra del Fuego and then Antarctica.
Getting off the plane and being used to the heat it felt a bit like Antarctica already. The scenery reminded me of the northern cape in Norway, well separated houses surrounded by a bleak landscape.
The hostels here have not moved with the times. They look and feel like prefabs but are even more expensive than Santiago. The Patagonian Hostel was no exception but it had a large bed with a thick duvet that was bliss after an all night flight.
The wind outside woke me up, Patagonia has a reputation for it. It is possibly the only place in the world where birds nest underground. If this was a typical day I could see why this seemed like a good idea. The room itself was leaning and when I went out to get something to cook I had difficulty staying upright. The wind is caused by the relatively narrow peninsular separating warm and cold ocean currents. Summer is the windiest time in Patagonia.
The evening was spent watching TV in the room - enjoyed Red Dragon.
