We made it to Lhasa (Sat 22nd) woo hoo. Because of some random issue with tickets we ended up flying in first class!!!!! Which was nice and probably our first and last time ever oh well. Our flight was only delayed slightly and we were picked up from the airport by our guide for the next while Tsetan and our driver Tenzin with the yak mobile. It took about one hour to drive into Lhasa from the airport but passed some nice scenery on the way, which strangely looks like the highlands of Scotland. We got to the hotel and then just took it easy for the rest of the day; Janes turn to be poorly this time!
After some sleep on Sunday we went with our new pals T&T to Sera Monastery (the first of many) which is just North of Lhasa it is part of the Yellow Hat Sect of Buddhism and our guide was great at giving us lots of information and history. We gave some offerings to the Buddhas to hopefully help us along as we need all the help we can get! We were able to watch the monks debate in the courtyard which we both enjoyed, it involves alot of hand clapping, stamping of feet and smug faces and that was just us!
On Monday morning we went to visit Drepung Monastery which was set slightly further out of the town on a hillside, again it is part of the Yellow Hat Sect. There were great views over Lhasa from here, and again we learnt more about Buddhism from our Guide. We got hit by a stick which belonged to Tsongkapa (look it up) and saw a rock with a picture of the Buddha of Wisdom coming out of it. We then had a very hearty lunch to prepare for our afternoon climb to the Potala Palace.
So at 2pm we started our climb up all the steps to the Potala Palace. Unfortunately only a small part of the palace is open to the public and most of it remains empty which is such a shame. Fortunately even the small part we got to see was fantastic. There wasn't many other people around so most of the time there was just us and our guide looking around. There is a lot of history in the buidling some good some bad. We saw the 5th Dalai Lamas tomb stupa which is made from 3721kg of gold and has a pearl from an elephants brain decorating it, hmmm. There were lots of beautiful 3d Mandalas of Buddhas palaces and again the views were great. For dinner we ate where Colin Farrell and Steven Segal have eaten!!!
Yesterday we drove for about one hour to Ganden Monastery, enroute we picked up Tsetan's baby Sonam who came with us for the adventure, awwwwww so cute. This monastery is set at the top of a very steep hill; luckily we drove up. The setting is fantastic and the monastery again had lots of beautiful decorations. The monastery was founded by Tsongkapa in 1417. We saw a sand Mandala here and again found out lots of interesting history.
Today was our free day, we had a wander around the Barkhor; where it all happens in Lhasa and has been happening for a long time! The Barkhor is set around the Jokhang temple. It is a place of pilgrimage for Buddhists and they circle the Barkhor clockwise some spinning prayer wheels, some praying mantras and some prostrating around we joined them for a while. There are people from all over Tibet and it is amazing to see all of the different outfits and decorations. We also went inside the Jokhang Temple which is the holiest temple in Tibetan Buddhism; although most of it has been rebuilt. It was build in the 7th Century by King Songsten Gampo and holds Tibets most sacred statue. Inside the main hall was beautiful with the light coming in from the high windows hiting off the golden Buddhas and lighting up all of the Monks red outfits. Tibetan decorations and Tibetan people have to be some of the best in the world. Everyone in Lhasa has been so friendly and couldn't have smiled at us any more they always welcome us with a tashi dele in the street. We love Tibet and the Tibetan people.
Also Jane finally got a little Tibetan table; lets hope it makes it home.
We head off tomorrow on the long bumpy road to Nepal with our pals T&T in the Yak mobile.
