We had a rather cold night sleep and woke up to a windy day! We set off early and went to find Cahill's lookout. We were the only ones around as we walked down to the lookout. It was a lovely view across the valley and was a very crisp morning. After admiring the views we went to the Jenolan caves which are further out than the blue mountains.
The drive took longer than we had expected and the road to it was quite narrow in places and on the edge of a cliff! Thankfully there was very little traffic so it wasn't too bad! As I said, the drive took longer than we thought and we were starting to wonder if we had missed them, but soon enough we found them and what an entrance! You drive in through a huge rock, almost like your driving into a cave and there is a beautiful lake as well. It was quite impressive and made the long drive seem worth it, even before entering a proper cave!
We were just in time for a tour of the Imperial cave. It is the most popular tour that they do so we knew it must be good. We were in a group of about 20 and there was a guide to take us around. The tour was pretty amazing! We went down into the cave through quite a large passage and then it got smaller and tighter and colder! It varied in size throughout but whenever we stopped to talk we could always stand. Parts were quite dark and wet, but there were lights to guide the way and to light up different features as we went round. The route we took was where the river once was and we saw some amazing parts of the cave, including crystals! We then ventured down to where the river currently flows. It was quite far down and when we reached it we couldn't believe that it was a river! It was so clear and so still that it just looked like sand! It was only when someone pointed out that it was water that we realised! Once we walked along the river further it began to flow, but it was still so clear! The water from the river was used in the taps above ground. The tour was just over an hour and we both really enjoyed it! The photos wont do it justice as per usual but we're glad we did it!
From the caves we headed a different way back to the mountains. We stopped for some lunch and decided to head out from the mountains and closer to Sydney as we are taking the campervan back tomorrow. It took us a good few hours from the caves to Windsor where we spent the night. Because of xmas and the school holidays, camp sites are getting more expensive and we ended up paying silly money for a site. The bonus - we were near a very beautiful black labrador!
