So much has happened since we left our hotel in Grand Falls that I guess I've been just too busy to put pen to paper so-to-speak. At this point I've driven close to 5,600 kilometers from the time we left Toronto so my arse is just a little tender. We stopped for lunch in Badger, Newfoundland at a quaint little lunch spot. Since I was a teenager in Parkdale I've been on a quest to find a Hot Turkey Sandwich that matched what they offered at the Edgewater Hotel. Restaurant after restaurant I've order a hot turkey sandwich over the years but never has it ever came close. Low and behold in a small restaurant on the edge of no where I find the perfect sandwich. The waitress was priceless, the cook was priceless and the two old ladies sitting at the next table were pure Newfoundlanders.
We drove on to Rocky Harbour so that we could be close to Gros Morne National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). We managed to snag the deal of the trip on a two-bedroom cottage that overlooks the harbour - and at $80.00 all in our Orange cottage at Banbury Cottages in Rocky Harbour, we're very happy here.
Last night we went to one of the two remaining restaurants still open in Rocky, white table cloths and prices to match, but I have to say that I just loved their $8.00 Large Shrimp Cocktails, locally caught - simply magnificent. When Ian went in to the local liquor shop the clerk asked him if he was going to the "kitchen party" at the local hotel so we thought we'd give it a try particularly because it was in the same hotel that we had dinner.
At $5.00 entry and an additional $10.00 to get "screeched in" - Ian and I thought we'd give it a try - so after kissing a cod fish named Sophie, dancing a jig, saying some newfie sayings and downing a shot of Screech, we because honest to goodness Newfies. "Lord tunderin Jesus bye"
Today was a little overcast, it was calling for rain about 2:30 p.m. and we decided that we were going to do to Western Pond Cruise & Tour that took us on a two-hour cruise of huge, ice-aged carved peaks of Igneous rock that took millions of years to form. The camera cannot capture the enormity of what's there in this channel. The rain held off until 3:30 so we made it off the cruise without issue.
I often wonder why I sign up for tours that take so much of my time. Today's tour had all of us walking THREE (3) kilometers from the parking lot to the boat and then at the end of the tour, another THREE (3) kilometers back to the car. I had my ugly sticks with me on the walk, but I just wasn't use to walking the distance - I have to admit.
Tonight it's maybe off for Moose burgers, something light and then early to bed for our trip tomorrow as we're taking the midnight sailing out of Port Aux Basques and then we'll be on the Cabot Trail first thing in the morning. It'll be a long day, so I'll need to get some sleep on the ferry or in the show in order to stay between the lines.
Thanks for following us. Next Stop probably at the end of the Cabot Trail somewhere. Updates to follow.
