Our prayers have been answered and the sun is back. Luckily on the morning of our trip, the weather had brightened up so we have had glorious weather while sailing around the Whitsunday Islands.
We started our trip on Wednesday at Airlie Beach Harbour where we were picked up by a dingy that took us to the main boat 'Boomerang'. We headed towards Tongue Bay (Whitsunday Island) while laying on the deck catching some rays. It was here that we spent the night on board the boat. We were lucky enough to have been given the bunks that were at the bottom of the hatch and also had to be folded away for eating. This meant it was chilly at night and we didnt have blankets either, we survived though. The sailing boat had 27 people on board and at night time, most people stayed up on deck drinking and socialising under the stars.
We were up yesterday (Thursday) at 7.30am for breakfast and then caught the dingy round to Whitehaven Beach. This was after we'd spotted giant turtles in the sea. We went up to the lookout point which had some beautiful views of the beach. It is true what they say, you cant take a bad photo from there. We then walked down and spent time on the beach before returning back to the boat.
We then headed to Cataran Bay (Border Island) where we went snorkelling over the coral. Lucky for us, we'd hired wetsuits as the water can get pretty cold. They also doubled up as stinger suites which was handy as we did see a few jelly fish. After spending time snorkelling, it was back on the Boomerang to Mantaray Bay (Hook Island) where we spent more time on deck taking advantage of the glorious weather. We also saw a pod of dolphins on the way.
We then headed for Nara Inlet (Hook Island) where we stopped for the night. On the way there, we also spotted a whale. This was lucky, as it was the first one they'd seen all season. We were also lucky that the sun stayed out til later than usual. As it was our last night, we stayed up on deck with everyone having a few drinks. As you can see from the photos, it does get pretty chilly of a night time.
Today, we sailed back to the mainland. We're spending tonight here, and then making our way to Magnetic Island for a few days. We had a fab time on board the Boomerang and were very thankful for the nice weather. It would not have been as good sailing in storms!!
