We got the ferry across from Townsville to Magnetic Island last Saturday and went straight to our hostel. We couldnt of asked for a better location, the hostel was right on the beach and it was so nice there. There wasnt much to do there apart from relaxing and sunbathing.
We had four nights there and spent most of our time sunbathing on the beach. We did however hire a topless car one day after figuring we couldnt ride scooters!! Could not balance on the things. The car was pink and like a barbie car, we so want one at home!! We stopped to see some colourful birds and fed some wallabies. We soon realised how small the island was as we went round visiting the different bays. It only took 10 minutes in the car to get from one end to the other. And no parents, we weren't speeding.
We left Magnetic Island Wednesday and got the ferry back to Townsville where we got our bus to Mission Beach. Once again, there isnt much to do here. Its just a little village with about four shops. The hostel however is really nice and has a pool so we spent a day sunbathing round the pool before deciding we liked the idea of white water rafting. We decided to book it up and did it yesterday.
As always, another early morning and we looked so good wearing walking boots, socks and shorts. We were picked up at 8am and got to the river Tully at 9.30am. We were put into a group of 7 and given a guide who run us through all the different things we'd have to do. There were 19 rafts all together and we were soon on our way. On the first set of rapids, one boat flipped and there was a few bodies floating down the rapids. We decided then to try our best to do everthing right so we didnt fall out. We went down many different rapids and drops. We had to pull a few more people in when there boat flipped and they came wizzing past. It was about 2 minutes later, that we went over a little rock and Marie fell off. All Krisha saw was her legs in the air. She did however hold on for dear life to the boat and was quickly pulled in. The water was very cold and fresh.
We stopped for a bbq lunch before carrying on for the rest of the day. Our boat was the only one that managed to get 'wrapped' around a rock which was a bit scary. The boat hit a rock and got stuck vertical with water pouring in. We were all standing up and couldnt let go because of the rocks. Other guides had to help pull up and onto the rock which was extremely slippery!! We then had to jump from one rock to another for a guide to catch us. It was quite an experience but we prefered that to have happened than the boat flip. It was a fun day and we are so glad we done it. We were also given oppertunities to swim in the calm bits which we did. It was weird swimming in our walking boots, Krisha nearly went down stream and had to be pulled in by an instructor about 1m away from where she could of stood up (she had already swam about 10m!!).
Today we are moving onto Cairns before going to Cape Tribulation tomorrow.
