Maria's 2006-7 Round the World Trip
Hi there!
Sorry I think it may be a few weeks since I did an update on this travel journal. Things have been chaotic to say the least.
Not sure where I got to last time so here goes.....sorry if I am repeating myself.
Well, spent the last few weeks looking for work and have had a few ups and downs and been messed around a bit by a few people but finally got with a great recruitment agency and I am working (at this very moment actually, its very cushy!). The work is mainly office management, administrator or reception but the work is much better paid than the UK. I've had to go all corporate which is the down side, as you all know I hate wearing a suit but I have had to invest as all the jobs are mainly in banks or law firms.
In terms of the house, it hasn't really worked out for me. As I emailed some of you basically the landlord is a pratt, lets himself in at any time and moves whoever he wants into the house. My housemates are lovely but even this morning there was a party going on at 5am when they know I have to be at work at 8am. You see, they manage to stay awake all night then go to work, I can do this but prefer not too. Last night was pretty awful as I discovered most of my food had gone missing too. They are great guys but not people who live in a similar way to me. They understand why I have decided to move out and there is no hard feelings or anything.
I have found a new place in Darlinghurst (one of the Sydney suburbs). It is not really anything special but it is cheaper than the other place and it seems to have some structure. Everyone works, so its quiet through the week and parties at weekend - which suits me fine. The place is spotless too which is lovely. I have met all my new housemates and they are slightly more on my shall we say mature wavelength - hopefully this place I can call home for the next few months. Unfortunately I can't move in until a week on Sunday so its sleepless nights until then.
Apart from that I haven't done much sightseeing as the weather is only starting to improve. But now that I am working I am planning trips to the Blue Mountains, Canberra and Melbourne. The great thing is that if I can't find anyone to come with me, I feel quite happy just jumping on the bus / train by myself. Australia is so friendly that you meet people everywhere and staying in youth hostels helps too.
The Blue Mountains are only 2 hours by train so I think I'll just do a day trip there, its cheap enough to get to so I can always go again if I don't see everything. Canberra is 4 hours by train so I think I'll do a weekend there. Melbourne is 8ish hours by train so I think when I have a gap in work I will take a few days off as well as the weekend and go there, maybe up to Adelaide too as I really want to visit Kangaroo Island.
In terms of Sydney, I have been to the aquarium, which was great. Its set in an area called Darling Harbour which is lovely at night when its all lit up. I can see me with several beers (and hopefully a sexy man) sat down there in the summer.
I'm off to Taronga Zoo on Saturday with my house mates. We have decided to take a picnic and make a day of it.
I have also booked onto a whale watching trip for the start of September. Basically its 99% guaranteed to see a whale or you get a refund. I am so looking forward to that!
Well, I better be off and do some work, although it is very quiet and I don't actually have anything to do!
Keep the emails coming, its lovely to hear from you and what's happening in the UK. I'm not homesick but I do miss you all.
Till next time (with some zoo piccies)...... Mx
