On Saturday, we decided to visit Railay beach as beth had read that the beach was really good and the rock formations around the beach were pretty spectacular. To get to the beach, we had to take a local bus to Ao among beach and then catch a longtail boat to Railay beach. After around half an hour waiting at the wrong bus stop, we located the bus to Ao Nong and jumped in the back. Again it's basically a pick up truck with seats in the back. We made it to Ao Nong and booked onto a longtail boat across to Railay beach. The boats don't pull up to a pier or anything so it was a case if wading into the sea and climbing up a ladder to get on board. This was fine for us but we felt sorry for the people carrying suitcases above their heads as they must have come on holiday to the resort. Anyway the boat ride was pretty spectacular as the coastline and islands consist of loads of limestone rock faces. Beth went wild with the camera as you will see from the photos.
We made it Railay beach and to be fair it is a pretty spectacular setting. Some of the hotel resorts looked really impressive and way out of our price range!! We lay on the beach for a few hours and had a quick look around although it's a really small resort so this didn't take long. When we were wading back into the longtail, Beth noticed a big jellyfish in the sea which we managed to dodge before hurriedly clambering up the ladder.
When back in Ao Nong, we flagged down a local bus back to Krabi. Unfortunately, all of the seats were taken so the driver told us to hold onto the back!! So for the 20km back to town we were holding on to the back of a pick up truck doing at least 80km an hour along a main road. Only in Asia!!!
On Saturday night we had a walk down to the river front and then had a look around the markets where we grabbed some good street food before heading back to the hotel to get sorted for the bus to Bangkok in the morning.
We've enjoyed Krabi but 3 days is probably enough to stay in the actual city. Ao Nong beach looked nice if you want to stay at a beach near Krabi and there were loads of places to stay along the beach front. Now for the mentalness of Bangkok!!!
