We arrived in La Paz on Tuesday morning at about 8am. To be fair, the bus ride from Sucre wasn't too bad and went over fairly quickly with the typical lack of sleep. One of the strange things we have found about Bolivian buses is that they let random people on even though there are no seats left. This was the case again where 4 locals got on at about 2am and proceeded to lie in the alleyway between seats and sit on the stairs!!
After arriving at the bus station, we quickly found our hostel, Adventure Brew. As our room wasn't ready, we sat in the dining area and had a breakfast of pancakes and tea. The pancakes are all you can eat so Beth is especially excited about this. After finishing our breakfast, the room was ready so we had super quick showers and practically ran into the city centre so we could catch the free red cap walking tour. We were about 10 minutes late but we managed to catch up on what we had missed and joined the tour. Believe it or not, there is a prison slap bang in the middle of La Paz. It is called San Pedro and is almost like a little city within itself as it is not just inmates housed there but their families as well. We made our way through the fruit market and to the witches market which La Paz is famous for. There are numerous stalls an shops run by the local women. We don't think they are actual witches but we were told that if we took pictures of them they would put a curse on us. This didn't stop one of our group who must now have a couple of hundred curses on him even though he could see the women didn't want to be photographed. Rather him than me!!
We then headed to the old Spanish quarter which is home to the Presidential palace and other important buildings. As the weather was getting rather English, we headed into probably the poshest hotel in La Paz, the name of which I can't recall. It is home to something called Urban Rush, which is where you can abseil off the 17th floor of the building. We did see some crazy people do this dressed as Spider-Man but it wasn't for us. The views over the city were amazing though. The tour was great and is basically paid for in tips. We would definitely recommend it as an intro to La Paz.
We then went back to the hostel for a spot of light lunch before I had a nap much to the consternation of Beth who had only slept for 12 hours on the bus. After waking up still quite tired, we decide to go to the hostel bar for some tea an a couple of drinks. This was especially important given that we get a free beer each every night and Beth hates beer!! After sinking the free beers, and Beth having a glass of wine, we ordered some food. The food was pretty decent but most importantly it took about an hour to arrive or which the hotel apologised an gave us another two free beers - I really hope it is like this every night!!! As it was happy hour, I thought it would be insulting not to take advantage so got another two beer as it was buy one get one free while Beth get likewise on the cairprinhas. As you will be able to tell from the photos, Beth enjoyed these very much!!
We had a bit of a lie in this morning before tucking into the pancake breakfast whilst playing some chess!! Afterwards, we went into town and had a good look around the witches market. Beth in particular enjoyed this and managed to buy a few things for pretty decent prices. We then booked the trip for the Death Road Bike Tour which we will do tomorrow. I don't know why we are doing this given my absolute fear of anything above a couple of metres but we are!!!
Tonight we have been for a lovely Mexican meal before coming back to the hostel for the free beers. The hostel bar is on the roof and outside there were two baths with wood burning underneath them to heat the baths and people had been relaxing in them. Not sure what health and safety at home would say about this. A couple of these people had obviously been drinking for most of the day and came and sat next to us in the bar. Needless to say that we couldn't really be bothered with them so we finished our drinks and went back to the room to prepare for the trip tomorrow for which we need to be up at 6am.
