The plan was to do couple of tours around Da Nang so we opted to organise our own transport. We negotiated a taxi to take us to 3 locations and that came to a total price of 500,000 Vietnamese dong or about $30. The first stop was Son Tri Mountain or Monkey Mountain. I was dubious about visiting some of these pagodas but was suitably impressed. I have never seen so much marble in one place. Leaving Monkey Mountain we headed to the Zone Five Military Museum. It was quite dark inside, looked like not many people go to visit it and also had a very propaganda feel to it with words like the imperialistic US forces and puppet allies. Apart from that the displays a very good. There were weapons captured from the French at Dien Bien Phu, yanks at Khe Sahn and all around Da Nang area. Outside there were M48 and M41 tanks, Huey Gunships, 175mm self propelled guns and various artillery pieces captured from the Americans and the South Vietnamese. They also had two mig 21 fighters on display. We were the only visitors there. The next destination was Marble Mountain, which is just south of the Pullman resort and past the abandoned Marble Mountain Air Facility I mentioned yesterday. I didn't know what to expect getting to Marble Mountain but it exceeded all expectations. You can either take the lift up or walk up the stairs, we opted to walk up the stairs and it was bloody steep and slippery. I thought I had seen a lot of Marble at Monkey Mountain but this was incredible. The steps had Marble throughout them, the small stones lying around was all Marble. There are a few caves and they have fantastic marble carvings of sculptures and the detail and the work is incredible. You would never be allowed to climb through some of these caves in Australia for safety reasons. There was one section where I just got through with the day pack on my back. The climb was well worth the effort and it was an amazing experience. We probably climbed the equivalent of about 28 or 30 floors and the stairs are very very steep but again it was well worth the effort. Marble mountain completed and we got the driver to drop us into Da Nang to an expats bar we heard about. We had a few beers and a feed at the Bamboo Bar looking over the Han River in downtown Da Nang. We then headed back to the resort and had a very quiet night.
