Lynda and Fred Travels
After a nice breakfast we went to the show room to wait our turn to go ashore. Fred and I walked the streets as he had not been here before then we joined Lyn and Stan for a trolley tour of the island. 1641 first settlers came 1800 first European farmers 1844 thomas hall came over and painted sand beach..with a green shoreline..very controversial 1860 to 1880 hotels started...rich people came....ate in hotels..had to book 2 years in advance Ships meant power 1880 cottage area 1947 fire destroyed most of city.....fire was contained for 2 days...then wind turned up...fire ran for 17 more days....many millionare homes destroyed..and lives lost..fought with picks and shovels... Samuel Champlain ...mount desert...bare...he hit rock and ran aground...whale ahead....he mapped area...his maps are still in use today... Locals used tO climb up to the mountain to see sunshine and sunset...Canadians brought alcohol for them from islands to usa during prohibition 47,000 acres...3 1/2 million people a year visiting Wananaky...4 tribes....settlers walked their trails, documented and took maps back to Boston. Rockefeller, fords, george buck am door Harvard 17 yrs....father of Arcadia park...came at 40 and spent all money on park... 1916 became national monument 1919 accepted as national park... 1929 became Acadia national park Jackson lab...use mice to help cure cancer, down syndrome...etc..just huge! Every med student wants to work here! We had a great trip, followed by lobster rolls from a deli on the main street... There was a long line up to get aboard....this week is so much different from last week! Fred and I played crib on 12th floor bar, then had a rest and dinner and show! Twice today bathroom flooded so not good! When we got home it was flooded again so we had plumber here till 2am!
