Lynda and Fred Travels
Well we had to be up and bags outside hotel room at 6:30....so downstairs for lovely breakfast....then hang out till all our bags got brought downstairs and identified by us...another hot budapest day. Tour of Budapest included a stop at opera house where we looked at the main hall as well as king and queens boxes. We had a glass of champagne while someone performed for us....very interesting! Next stop was the hero square where a statue of all their leaders was...we had to listen in the hot sun about each of the 14 leaders. Budapest once was a very rich city...so rich that when they asked for designs for anew parliament building they could not decide on one design so instead built three parliament buildings! There has been so many revolutions here over the years....really only a free country since 1960....now the country is very poor....average wage is 600 euro a month....minimum is 300... Next stop was fisher mans palace and the castle district....this was where all the kings men lived and it was totally burned down in last revolution....in 1964 they restored all the buildings. And now it is a tourist place....beautiful views of the city from here....Buda is either where you live or where you want to live....most people live in pest! Then lunch in Vaci street and then a 5 hour drive to Melk and board our ship. Had a nice dinner waiting for us...boat is just beautiful! We love our room....unpacked and lots of room! Had entertainment in evening which was excellent!
