Lynda and Fred Travels
Well finally I got myself up and out walking for some excercise! Budapest is obviously a night city....nothing opens till 10am....the bus tours don't start till 11am! At 6am the streets are bare other than the street sweeper and maybe a few keen shop owners who are washing the pavement in front of their shops. As the bus didn't start to 11 and we needed to do a wash and the hotel does not provide that service on weekends (apparently Friday is a weekend!)....we ventured out with two backpacks of dirty clothes. We hopped on a tram which got us part of the way and walked the rest....we got there at 8:45 and a lady which did not speak English shoes us out....so across the street for a cuppa tea until laundry opened. Then the man spoke English (what a treat cause the lady certainly could not). We left him with our laundry and he said it would take 2 1/2 hours so off we went walking and tramming back to our hotel. Very very hot by now! We then took the pink bus which took us for a tour around the river. The bus was air conditioned and we were tempted to stay there all day, but we got off and explored the huge market...again hidden in a massive building....the first floor was fruit, vegetable and meat...and it was hot in there so the meat stunk and the veggies were dying for air. Upstairs was mainly thousands of beautiful table cloths, runners, etc. very beautiful and all hand made. We did not see any theatres or adverts for shows/entertainment...not even in the tourist books....all about dining. We found out Buddha means water and pest means lime burning! Buda is on the hilly side of the river and Pest is the flat side. History....Romans occupied budapest for 400 years...the Turks occupied Budapest for 150 years...the nazis occupied for 5 years and the Russians occupied for 40 years...so they have only been free since 1990! Then lunch at a cafe on Vaci street...Main Street....fight for a table where the fan spraying moisture was at...then a trip back to laundry mat...this time we took the tram and then a bus...both ways....we never paid a cent for the tram or buses....apparently you are to buy a pass and very occasionally they spot check....but we were lucky! During our travels we Sussex out dinner places.....an Irish pub, a jazz place near laundry mat and a Sinatra piano bar on the river..... After a very nice cruise on the river where we met a group of young university male students who were besotted with Fred and gave him drinks and hugs and took pictures of them with him!!!! (Not sure what that was all about but Fred enjoyed it!) Dinner....well the Irish pub and jazz places were too far away and the piano bar had egyptian music rather than Sinatra....we strolled down Vaci street and found a lovely little restaurant where Fred could have his fish and chips and I could have chicken and green beans! A great...but hot...day!
