Lynda and Fred Travels
Up early today...not too hard as still jetlagged! We had a perfect day! Could not have been better! We had to drive to Port Allen where we boarded "Lucky Lady" - a five hour cruise from Kauai Sea Tours. had excellent staff who took care of your every need...helped balance you when needed, looked after the sea sick, waited hand and foot on us...and were very funny! Coffee was served immediately which we all needed as it was so early...soon to be followed by a buffet breakfast. We motored 2 hours up the coast to the Napali coast and state Park. Along the way there were rolling hills and pretty beaches. The beaches are pretty deserted...only get into by dirt road off the highway. Aces to many is by boat or canoe only. The native Hawaiins used to live on the coast even in the Napali coast and were excellent fishermen but also went back I to the canyon to grow vegetables. As we went along the coast most of the land - 40,000 acres -was owned by one family - the Robinsons...they also bought a neighbouring island for $10,000 off the King...with a promise to let the current Hawaiin residents stay on the island....now 4 generations later there are quite a few natives on island but still privately owned! The mountains started on the Napali coast going from 1,000 feet right up to the highest being 4,000 feet...very spectacular mountains with all different shapes formed from the volcanoes and wind and weather! The sails went up for half an hour allowing us to take pictures and just relax. Then we headed back down the coast to our snorkel spot. Yes I went snorkelling...no coral to speak of but quite a few fish...mostly black and blue and spotted brown...but was lovely to cool off! Lunch was then served followed by wine and Mai Tai's.....they really looked after us! We boarded ship at 7:30am and were back in port at 1pm....lovely lovely cruise! There are roosters and chickens everywhere....morning you here the roosters crow and driving you must watch out for the chickens. We then got in the car and headed north to climb to Waimea Canyon....it was unbelievable....the soil is red and the trees bright green and it is a huge canyon with pretty waterfalls! Apparently they have the highest rainfall in the world here..in the canyon....but average to less than average on the coast. I think it is much prettier than the Grand Canyon....and not as big but almost...lots of helicopters flying into the canyon! Then we drove further to reach the top of that 4,000 foot mountain and look down on the Napali coast that we saw hours ago by boat...just as spectacular a scene! Home with Mustang roof down...how nice...home about 5 pm... Watched 6 days and 7 nights with Harrison Ford and saw shots from Kauai where it was filmed...especially the tunnel they ran through!
