Lynda and Fred Travels
Well what a drive! Arizona is so hot and dry and nothing but rocks to see....how people can live here I don't know....houses in middle of desert...no trees, no flowers, just red or grey rocks and dirt! And the poor sheep, horses and cows have to live off this barren land! How lucky are Aussie animals! The main road to Page had a landslide in February and was still closed so we had to go the long way....we stopped to see the Little Colorado river gorge which was spectacular, the stopped at the huge Cameron Trading post for a squid and a coffee...so over shopping by now! We drove alongside the Navajo Indian reserve which is 20 times bigger than the Grand Canyon. The Navajo's have stands along the sides of the road selling their gear....mostly jewellery and pottery! Most of the drive was monotonous but every now and again a huge mountain would show up unexpectantly....some looked like Ayers Rock...most were reddish in colour and all awesome shapes! When we arrived in Page we went directly to the adventure centre to confirm our Colorado river trip and Hummer tour for tomorrow...all is good! Then we tried to find our hotel...on the way we found a Denny's which we both love for brekky and lunch...reliable good food....we go to nice places at night but when travelling we want something quick and reliable....love a bakery for lunch as first choice but they are few and far between out here....in fact today's drive reminded us so much of west Australia....red dirt (no dust though), hot, absolutely nothing for miles and miles...you really needed to watch your fuel! Our hotel is quite away from town...right on the lake with 2 pools...but much too hot to go in them! We have a lovely parking lot view!!!! But won't be in room much as tomorrow we are off all day and then head out for Bryce Canyon... Having dinner here in their nice restaurant then bed early. Spectacular views from our hotel which is actually in a marina on Lake Powell...need to look to understand!
