LINDA'S TALES OF TRAVEL AND OTHER CATASTROPHES
I have spent the last few days in the Cornwall region, staying in an 'interesting' backpackers in the seaside town of Newquay. The hostel was clean enough, but there were some seriously protruding springs in the beds and the manager of the place was not the most cognisant or organised of people to say the least. He was one of those old surfer dudes who clearly did more drinking than surfing in their youth. Anyway it was an amusing experience and we had a dorm room to ourselves and a wicked view of the ocean!
You will be please to know that the Newquay beach actually had sand - none of this pebble business they had going on in Brighton! As the weather is so hot at the moment it was a good spot to stay! Newquay also seems to be the 'party' capital over that side of the country...although the nightclubs looked rugged at best and down-right dodgy at worst. None-the-less we enjoyed a few nice beers of a night while looking out onto the beach...lovely :)
The main reason for making the 5 hour (!) mission over to Newquay was to visit the nearby 'Eden Project'. Basically Eden is an experiment in environmental restoration, with a former quarry having been turned into a garden oasis. The highlight of the place was the two biodomes. One was made to simulate the humid tropics of Africa, parts of Australia etc, and the humidity toward the top reaches up to 90%! Surfice to say we were sweating like pigs in there! The second dome was made to simulate the hot but dry regions of the mediterranean etc. Both biodomes were incredible, you really feel like you are being transported to another region in the world every few steps! And the flora was absolutely spectacular.
Speaking of hot climates, believe it or not England is actually sunny at the moment with temperatures in the 30s! At the moment they are having their second 'heat wave' since we've been here. Basically that just means they are having a small slice of what an Australian summer is like! It has been quite entertaining listening to the radio today as all the Brits are complaining about it being so hot and many have been sent home from work and school early. Oh, and apparently a few roads have started melting today with the heat ha ha it's hilarious! I must say though it is feeling quite hot tonight and apparently today's temperature (36 degrees) is the highest ever recorded for July. I guess we brought some of the Aussie heat with us :)
