LINDA'S TALES OF TRAVEL AND OTHER CATASTROPHES
The flight from Melbourne was delayed by two and a half hours so a long flight to Hong Kong felt even longer! Despite arriving about 12:30 at night it was still sweltering in Hong Kong. The temperature today was in the high 30s I think but it is the humidity that really wears you out!
We were up early today to go on a bus tour of Hong Kong Island (so it felt like we hardly hit the bed last night!). It was well worth doing the bus tour as it saved us the hassle of knowing where to go and how to get there!
I was amazed by the contrasts in Hong Kong. Firstly, there is so much natural beauty to be found but then also buildings crammed in everywhere and the infamous skyscrappers! It is obvious that they just don't have enough space left on Hong Kong Island. The second thing that struck me was the obvious gap between rich and poor. The poor cannot afford there on space so live in ugly, run-down, governemnt-subsidised housing. Meanwhile, high up in the hills, there are houses so big I wonder how they managed to even build them there!
In the afternoon we spent time on the mainland area of Kowloon, exploring the markets etc. I was surprised that it was fairly quiet...until 6pm that is, when hoards of people came out of nowhere and covered the streets!
So overall it was very interesting to visit Hong Kong and we managed to cover a lot in a day!
Now...off to England!
