Day 5
Woke up feeling great this morning. Sad to leave Fussen but excited about heading closer toward Interlaken and the Swiss Alps.
Before breakfast I managed to ring Sherri for a brief chat, I was really happy to finally speak with her but forgot to ask whether she had picked up her new car. I also left another voice message Ebony who I miss incredibly. Mum posted some pics of the family from healsville which I enjoyed flicking through.
After breaky we loaded up on beer from the local market knowing Switzerland was going to be double the price of Germany. We hit the road and headed toward Leitchenstein which is a tiny independent country nestled between Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Ryan and I tried practising our German in the car and tried to work out what language the Swiss spoke. It turns out they speak German to so it was a waist of time learning Danish for 2 hours for which I'll put down to a moment of stupidity but something we were all able to laugh about.
Today i doubled the amount of Countries I've frequented in my life but you'd hardly know it, same landscapes similar cultures, languages and currency, except the Swiss who have not converted to the Euro and continue to use francs.
We decided to stop in Leitchenstein for lunch but decided not to eat. It was extremely over priced and the whole place reminded me of Canberra in a sterile kind of way just slightly more impressive on all aspects.
On a number of occasions today Ryan and I were not sure what country we were in, it was confusing with little signage at the borders. I should also mention we were following Nathan and Myranda so the sat nav was off and the maps were away. We had our first taste of the alps in Wasserauen. The mountains became extremely dramatic and vertical. The sky was full of paragliders and cable cars taking extremist to the highest points in the region. Ryan started to get excited about doing something extreme and more specifically sky diving. Later that night I would agree to the sky dive and so would Myranda but we were drunk and took it all back the next day.
We had lunch in Appenzell eating local cuisine from a bakery. Apparently the Appenzell is a very traditional Swiss Village, it's certainly picturesque and can serve up an amazing view.
We continued driving toward Lucerne enjoying the brilliant views occasionally stopping for a photo. I felt particularly relaxed as we pumped music in the car listening to Hozier, Sia, Lorde and the Pumpkins.
We had a little trouble finding accommodation but Myranda made an excec decision to try a bnb in a town called Meggen right on Lake Lucerne with spectacular views of the Swiss Alps and we managed to get a room that could accommodate the four of us.
It was a tough evening eating local pizza and enjoying the beers and schnapps we had purchased earlier on that day. Nathan even took a swim in the freezing lake, what a dickhead!
