Date: 30th July 2011
Place: Airlie Beach - Whitsunday Islands
Weather: Sunny but quite windy
Got up fairly early today to grab some breakfast and get some warm clothes before getting onto the boat at 11. I walked to the harbour and met everyone going on the boat and we were then all taken on a little speedboat to Avatar which is a massive Catamaran with big trampoline type bits to chill on.
Once we were all on board we sat on the one side and the skipper, Kevin, had a good chat with us about what we had in store and safety. We then just all chilled out for ages trying to dodge the waves that came up through the trampoline thing. It was a lot colder than I thought it was going to be because of the wind.
Because there are loads of jelly fish in the waters we all had to get wet suits on before we could go snorkelling. It was so cold I hated the thought of going in water but this was the Great Barrier Reef so I didn't want to miss out. We suited up and then all jumped in together. It was freezing! And my wet suit, which was an xs, was still too long for me and came right over my feet.
There weren't many fish there at all just a lot of nice coral. We messed around a bit and Joe took some pictures of us with his underwater camera. The funniest part was trying to dodge the coral because everyone kept kicking it. At one point I was looking at something with Ben and suddenly some Coral came up behind him. I screamed so he turned around, screamed and panicked. It was a funny reaction to Coral at the time.
That was the last of the swimming that day so for the rest of it it was just cruising around looking at the scenery and getting to our spot to stay overnight. One we had anchored we had dinner and some of us sat outside and Kevin started telling us of his plans to change the world by taking over a small country and working his way up. He planned to sort out world peace by making it law that women have to go around topless. It actually made sense in a weird way.
His theory was backed up by the points that you mostly get extremists coming from muslim countries and they don't see any of a woman. They're all frustrated so become extremists. He explained it in a better way anyway. When we went in everyone seemed to have gone to bed so Angus and I went and lay outside and looked at the stars. We were having weird conversations about like Aliens and bits and then he pointed at the sky and said 'oh my god whats that!' Turned out it was just the light on our mast which had gone weird but he scared the hell out of me.

Gran Knowing that you're going diving AT NIGHT on the Great Barrier Reef makes me wonder how cold the sea will be then if it's freezing during the day. Brrr! Hopefully you'll have a better fitting wetsuit. No, no, no... NONSENSE! That Kevin's idea about world peace was that of a sex mad voyeur!! It's not 100% true that most extremists are from Muslim countries. Extremists can be found anywhere, from many cultures, and some resort to terrorism e.g. the Norwegian right wing fanatic who recently killed so many innocent people in Oslo and at a youth camp. He was (supposedly) a fundamental Christian.
