San Augustin is a little village in the middle of nowhere in the hills.
Famous for Colombia´s oldest archaeolgical rock carvings, its steeped in history. The vilage itself is poular wit }h campesino types who come in on their horses to sell strange shaped vegetables and get drunk on sugar cane liquor.
While here we hired some horses and went for a ride up into the hills to check out the waterfalls and some of the famous carvings. i havent ridden before and damian hasnt ridden for years. the guide just kicked my horses arse until it gallped off for about 500 meters and i was hanging on for dear life screaming. eventually we got the hang of it although my horse was very naughty and kept biting all the other horses on the bottom.
we played billiards with some locals who took us salsa dancing and damian got his hair cut by a local man who seemed fixated with his new gringo friend.
damian got to play football at one of the local games, and only let in three goals. ( it was three- three, any worse and we would have had to leave town immediately)
its a lovely place, really chilled out and charming, people seem to have nothing better to do than hang around leaning on things, starting conversations is easy. Not many tourists come here because its right in the south, where FARC are a problem, so business seems slow, but we were charmed. There were military guarding the roads every 200metres so there are no FARC here any more.
we left for the border after relaxing here for 11 days!
There were landslides all the way so it took us a while to get to the border town ( mainly the delays were caused by the bus companies lieing about the seriousness of the problem in order to try and sell us different tickets)
at the border town there was a transport strike, so we had to hire a scab taxi to get there, we were hassled all the way by the picket throwing stuff at the taxi and banging on the doors and windows (aaargh quick lock the door he has a machete sort of thing) and then across into Ecuador.
we were dead sad to leave colombia, but our visa was hours away from expiry (a and a huge fine). It really is the most wonderful place!
