I just spoke to Rob Winner and heard that Mary Anne and Amy have landed safely in Chicago. I pray that they also make it safely back to Greenville and Columbus to rest.
Yesterday, we went to town to run some errands. We dropped Abella, Lightness, and Newstar off at the salon to get their hair done. Mutta and Arnold took the car to the shop to get the shocks checked. Annalisa and I walked around town. She showed me the hospital and took me to the Catholic bookshop. The nuns running the bookshop were from Uganda and they were so kind. They welcomed me and asked me to come to their church if we have time before we leave. After the car was fixed, Mutta, Arnold and I drove about 40 minutes out of town to Katoke where Arnold is a teacher at a school for teachers. It was beautiful with a lovely view from his porch of the green hills and valleys.
We stopped to get some groceries at the market and pick up the girls on our way back to Buma (Mutta's village).
Today, we decided to stay in Buma and not drive anywhere. The roads are very bumpy and it takes about 30 minutes to get into town (Bukoba). We had some delicious coffee, bread and peanut butter for breakfast. The whole area around Mutta's house is surrounded by the most gorgeous green banana trees. It looks very tropical and is a little paradise away from stress and worries. I feel a little guilty that I haven't started studying for my boards, but I guess I will have plenty of time for that when I return home.
After breakfast, Mutta and I took a 3-hour hike around the village to an amazing view of Lake Victoria. From here, it is hard to believe it is a lake. It looks like an ocean. We stopped to visit many people along the way. Everyone was happy to see us and welcomed us into their homes for a visit. Everyone calls me Mgole (the new bride). When we returned home, the neighborhood kids were working on a skit for me. They had a drum, dancing, and singing. Some even painted their faces white with sand. Even the babies were dancing. I am so humbled by the children. They like to just come and sit by me and watch what I do. I started to make silly faces for them the other day and they just laugh and laugh. They also LOVE to have their picture taken.
