Today is science day..... So today's blog is written by Louise!!! Did you know that Alessandro Volta originated from Como?
We started our day at the museum dedicated to him at the harbour, which houses his instruments used to conduct his experiments as a pioneer in electricity. (See photos). We then walked around the harbour to the Funicular, a vertical train (well 80 degrees!!!) to Brunate, a small village at the top of the mountain overlooking the Lake. A further 25 minute climb we reach the summit where there is a light house in the honour of Volta, as this is where he lived, again a 60 degree hike but well worth the effort because the views are amazing (photos don't really give it justice). The lighthouse has 124 steps to the top for an even better view, but when we reach the top Sarah decides sitting in situ is enough for her!!! I walked around the view point to capture the views and Sarah does brave a crawl to have a peak!!!
On our return down into Como we wandered the town, had a look around the Cathedral and did a spot of 'essential' shopping. Walking back to the hostel we picked up a snack and a bottle of red wine and set up a picnic spot in the park overlooking the Lake, played a game of Yahtzee (Sarah won), entertained ourselves feeding the ducks
and small birds (not an expert so don't know what they are called!!), whilst shooing away the pigeons. Ventured back to the hostel to sort out our next move down the coast tomorrow (Sarah did whilst I had a siesta!!) then dinner and early night.
