Another morning by the pool and another afternoon/evening plan. Today we ventured into the large medieval town of LUCCA. On our way we stopped off at the Devils bridge a feat of medieval engineering, legend has it that the builder of the bridge had messed up and the devil appeared to him and asked to help but on condition that the man gave his soul to him. To do this he had to be the first to walk across the bridge. Reluctantly the man agreed and the bridge was duly raised on one side (see pic) by the Devils fork. Upon opening the man was talked into allowing a pig to cross the bridge first, the pig crossed, the devil was enraged and subsequently jumped off the bridge......the devil has never been seen in these parts again!!!
We both love a good medieval town and Lucca did not disappoint. The town is encased in a large wall that has has a tow path on which you can walk around, we ventured into the centre and took in the tall buildings, towers and once more a church or 2. The main Cathedral of St Martin was spectacular with amazing art and one of the churches housed the Saint of Domestic servants Saint Zita. For information the previous Saint we saw in Como was Saint Ranieri the patron saint of Travellers!!
A stop for a drink and people watch in the main square then back to the villa and Carlo......
