Louise's Travels
Am now in Lijiang and really nice old town in the South of China. We're staying in the old part which is a maze of old chinese buildings and shops which all look the same (it took us about half an hour to find our way to the centre on the first day even though its actually only about 10mins away!) Lots of pretty chinese cotton tops and pashminas shawls here (resisting the temptation to buy them all!) Staying in a guesthouse here and the 'grandma' who runs it makes lovely food. (Mum you'll be glad to know have been having green veg and rice for dinner most days!)
Went to Tiger Leaping Gorge yesterday which was amazing. I don't think our photos will do it justice. Its the highest gorge on the yangzee river. We started off climbing up with a couple of other people (but we walked to fast and then took a slight detour via a guesthouse for lunch) so ended up walking by ourselves in the afternoon. Was really peaceful as it was literally just us on the path as far as you could see. The trek up to the top of the mountain (2660m) involved 28 rocky mountain bends. Not good for the legs. But the views from the top across to the snowy topped mountain opposite were amazing. We spent the night in a guesthouse in the mountains where we met all the other people who we'd seen in the morning which was really nice. (and had more nice food including hot chocolate and pancakes!) We set off in the morning with another British guy we'd met (an accountant!) hoping to take a high path up to a big waterfall, unfortunately we couldn't find the turning off anywhere so ended up coming down and walking along the road. When we got to another guesthouse we asked about the route only to find the bridge on the path was broken so we wouldn't have been able to go far! We took a mini bus back to the town but the road (although tarmaced) was obviously prone to landslides. Some parts were covered in stones and the driver just accelerated over parts (have never been so terrifiedof ending up at the bottom of the gorge!) Luckily we made it back safely!
Hope you all had a lovely easter.
