I can't believe we are leaving to head home, i want to stay in the campervan forever!
After we left Byron we headed North, such an easy drive. We stopped at Brunswick Heads and had food at the Brunswick Hotel. It was so beautiful and the food was tremendous! We walked over the bridge which had a creek with people swimming and kayaking, then headed to the beach. The beach was amazing, hardly anyone around and it was a scorching day. We took stupid photos jumping in the air and doing cartwheels, as usual we didn't want to leave!
Charlie met us then we headed north to North Cabarita Beach just past Hastings Point where we found lovely little secluded beaches. We drove North again and stopped at the Queensland, NSW border. Call me a saddo but i wanted a picture with it, haha. We watched the sunset there and phoned round caravan parks and decided to stay in Tweeds Head. We were looking forward to being connected to electricity and have running water with showers nearby.
The caravan park was called Collonial Tweed - it was sat by the river with the nicest staff who gave us loads of information about where to go and visit. Its so cheap to park a campervan too - 3 of us for $35. Lesley and i had an early night, Charlie went to the pub.
The next day was Anzac Day and the woman from Collonial Tweed told us about the massive dawn service that was being held at Elephant Rock at Corrumbin Beach. It was one of the biggest in Australia and would be televised, so 4am the alarm went off and away we went. It was amazing to be standing on a beach with EIGHT THOUSAND people watching the sunrise. There was music, speeches and singers all paying their respect to the fallen.
We went back to bed for a few hours then Lesley and i went to Corrumbin Creek next to Palm Beach then i drove us up to Springbrook National Park. That drive is not for the faint hearted, inclined roads of 17% and twists and turns, single file roads... the lot! We went to the Natural Arch 1st - hands down one of the nicest things i have ever seen! If you go at night you can see glow worms. Its all rock formations and waterfalls and the Natural Arch itself is like a cove of rock you can go underneath and theres a waterfall out the back. So beautiful! Everyone should go see it!
Next we drove 25km to the main part of Springbrook and hammered along the 11km to 'The Best Lookout' for the sunset. Beautiful scenes and the pictures just didn't do it justice.
After that we drove back to the caravan park as we decided to check in another night and head home from here. We had a few drinks with Charlie and his friend plus two others who were in the camp site then got a taxi down to an amazing bar called Twin Towns (Definitely twin something...), it had a live band on for Anzac Day. We ended up not being able to get a taxi so walked back home - took us about an hour. HELLISH.
Anyone considering renting a campervan DO IT. Don't hesitate for a minute. Driving all that only cost us $140 in petrol and you can get bigger ones that sleep more people. We had a sink, fridge, little cupboards for clothes, it came with loads of sleeping bags, pillows and duvets and converted from a seating area to sleeping area in a matter of minutes. We used a company called Britz in Ballina - we ended up having a problem with the back door (Charlie shut his suitcase in it!!) and we thought it was broken. Thankfully, we had insurance anyway but the guys were super nice about it. Others might not have been.
This trip has made me want to do the Great Ocean Road in a campervan!
