Nimbin is a famous little place just outside Byron Bay... Typically famous for the stoners, weed smokers and weed eaters....
A day trip to Nimbin is included with your Ozexperience bus so we booked up once we got to Byron.
Not to anyones surprise it was raining, rain in Oz is a million times worse than home. Its humid, terrential and comes when you least expect it.....
The bus picked us up from our hostel and when we seen it we were shocked and nervous - the bloody thing looked like it was going to fall apart! The driver was a super friendly man but we were pretty sure he was high too.
On the way to Nimbin (the journey took about 1.5hrs) the driver played funny 'stoner music' and told us about Nimbin being a part of the 'Rainbow Region' and its cannabis culture since it was taken over by hippies after a festival in the 1970s. It now has a very small population but the idea of Nimbin spreads far and wide.
It has to be the stangest place i have ever been. Theres people selling weed, weed cookies, mushrooms and all sorts on the streets. Theres a little museum you can visit on the main street which helps you understand the Nimbin people and their culture a bit more as well as going into their history. Its free but they ask for $2 donation. Its filled with quotes and pictures and art decor.
Theres also loads of little shops you can buy scarves, bracelets, tarot cards, healing agents etc.
We decided to buy weed cookies just to try, costing us $25 for 3 off a woman in the street but nothing happened they were just normal cookies. Everyone that walks around is very friendly but they are also very very high! Haha.
The bus driver took us to a pub on the journey home and made us a BBQ which was held indoors due to the rubbish weather then we set off again.
Glad i went and experienced Nimbin especially on a free trip but i won't be returning as its not for me.
