...and I’ll be in Scotland afore ye...For me and my true love will never meet again, on the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. (
We left Oban and took a very scenic route past Loch Lomond to Glasgow. I must say the scenery is phenomenal here. We bought a sandwich when we stopped for breakfast with the idea of stopping at Loch Lomond and picnicking. We did but it didn’t last long. It was cool and windy and started to rain so we gobbled them up and got back to our drive to Glasgow.
Glasgow (pronounced GLAS-goh) is a port city on the River Clyde in Scotland's western Lowlands. It's famed for its Victorian and art nouveau architecture, a rich legacy of the city's 18th–20th-century prosperity due to trade and shipbuilding. Today it's a national cultural hub, home to institutions including the Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and National Theatre of Scotland, as well as acclaimed museums and a thriving music scene. It is Scotland’s largest city with a population of 600,000. There are basically two main areas to Glasgow: the West End (residential area), where we are staying, and the downtown core which is mostly commercial and retail. Glasgow is different from Edinburgh as it’s a working mans city. It doesn’t seem as cosmopolitan as Edinburgh. And we hear that people from Edinburgh look down on Glaswegians (rhymes with Norwegians).
We arrived in Glasgow with no problem or made our way to our flat. I texted Chris, our landlord, but he didn’t reply right away. We finally found a free parking spot in the street close to the flat so grabbed it. After squeezing our car in, so the mirrors wouldn’t be taken off by passing cars (cars are parked on both sides of the street so there’s only room for one car at a time to drive on the street), we did a little bit of exploring in the area and then walked back to the flat where we were supposed to meet Chris at 2 o’clock. I was going to give him a phone call if he didn’t reply back to us. As we were waiting, a guy drove up and asked me if I was Liz. Sure enough it was Chris and he brought us up (the 4 flights) to our home for the next 3 nights. We were so happy! It’s a lovely flat with a king sized bed (just a little smaller than the size of our previous room), living room, and a private washroom. Once settled we set off to do some further exploring and stock up on supplies.
We walked towards the downtown core on Sauchiehall St (pronounced SOCKY-hall) passing beautiful buildings and getting a sense of Glasgow so we could decide what our plan of action for tomorrow was. We walked for about 3 hours, had dinner, and returned to the flat to prepare for tomorrow’s adventures. So far, I really like what I’ve seen. I was expecting a dirty, low class city but I’m impressed by the cleanliness and the friendliness and the gorgeous architecture. I can’t wait to get into it tomorrow.
