Today we are leaving our villa in Kilconquhar Estate and driving to Elgin in the Highlands. It was going to be about a 4 hour drive so we decided to break it up and stop st Dunnottor (pronounced duh-NAW-tour) Castle, sitting on top of a bluff that sticks out into the North Sea. The ruins are nothing short of spectacular. I love learning about the history and trying to imagine what it was like to live in those times. William Wallace, Mary Queen of Scots, the Marquis of Montrose and the future King Charles II all visited the Castle. But it’s claim to fame is it was at Dunnottar Castle that a small garrison held out against the might of Cromwell’s army for eight months and saved the Scottish Crown Jewels, the ‘Honours of Scotland’, from destruction. This cliff top fortress was the home of the Earls Marischal, once one of the most powerful families in Scotland.
After exploring all the different areas of the fortress we hopped back into our cars and settled into our cottage that is to be our home fir the next 4 days.
