Today was the Ekka festival. When I bought a ticket I wasn't actually sure what it was, but apparently it's THE event of the Brisbane social calendar!
Turns out its a agricultural festival though also includes art, food, a fun fair & something called show bags - as well as firemen selling charity calendars!
We saw cows (real and plastic) , horses, cowboys, sheep, wood cutters, pigs, dogs and cats. We also had a strawberry ice cream (apparently that's traditional) and my friend Maaike (the only other under 50 from the previous weeks meet up event) had a Dagwood dog (another tradition, seems like a battered hotdog on a stick). We managed to avoid buying a show at which turned out to be a carrier bag of shampoo samples, though ones with kids toys and chocolate were also available for a bargain $50 each.
Tonight I went out in 'the valley'. Starting at the bars on James street I met Maaike and two girls (Lauren & Kate) from girlcrew. Girlcrew is basically a city based Facebook social group where girls can meet likeminded girls to meet. We then went to a brilliant Tiki bar before going to a club. Having been out the night before for works drinks I was starting to fade by this point!
