Lin & Phil - Out and About in the Big World...
So for the last day in Goa Tom lost his scooter v-plates as we whizzed around South Goa on some.....scooters. Everything was going really well, We stopped off at a great big desserted beach, had a swim and saw some local architecture. However, Whilst I acknowledge that the speedometer and fuel gage didnt work, i may have been slightly too trustworthy when the scooter owner assured me that our fuel would last all day! Half way up a very steep hill mine and Lins scooter cut out! Fortunately for us a very helpful chap told us the nearest garage was 15km away....and that there was a local shop at the bottom of the hill that sold petrol in squash bottles. So luckily we rolled to the bottom, filled her up and got on our way.
Next day we headed back upto Panjim in a taxi and caught a flight to Cochin in Kerala. We found an awesome 'resort' which was on the edge of a backwater canal. The cottage was awesome too - its best feature was an outdoor bathroom, theres nothing like a nice cold outdoor shower when its 33 degrees. Much of the day was spent lazing around in our hammocks. In the afternoon we took a little boat ride along a few canals and were rowed along by the boat owner. Unfortunately due to a large head wind on the return leg there was insufficient power and Phil had to save the day by rowing too! (man points were earned).
Tom had a massage in the evening. Tom was shocked when he had to get completely naked (bar a loin cloth) and get oiled up by a hairy Indian man. Although the local area did experience a power cut; Tom assured us there was no straying hands, however, he later let slip that his testicles were still oily!
We hired an entire houseboat for 24 hours. It arrived at midday and we were piped on board. The houseboat trip proved to be quite good fun and very relaxing. There were a number of highlights: Our chef had worked for an Amani diplomat in various embassies around the world for 21 years and coked up some great grub. We also went in an extremely small canoe (Not the one in the pictures as i didnt dare take the camera onboard) once the 3 of us and the driver was on board the water line lay only 4 inches below the canoe. Me and Lin became rather panicky when Toms typically rugby styled clumsy rash movements nearly cap sized our vessel!
After arriving at port we departed from the houseboat and took a taxi to Cochin, found a nice place to stay and consumed, at a local art cafe, possibly the best chocolate cake ive ever had.
We watched a traditional Keralan play in the evening. These guys train for years to learn all the face movements, they can tense lots of parts of the face which i didnt know you could to pull over the top expressions. The make they used was extremely colourful, They even wear it in their eyes to make them look red (see the big guy in the picture with a green face).
Right were about to jump on a plane to Mumbai and hopefully get ourselved to the test match tomorrow (thats cricket for all you swedes).
