Eucla was great - the caravan park was up so high and the view was fantastic. A beautiful breeze was coming off the southern ocean, and there were crows flying around - it reminded us of the snowy mountains actually - similar bird, tree and plant life for some reason. We left around 9am, and our first stop was the Bunda Cliffs lookout - a superb spot to see the ocean pound against 80m cliffs, and the shrubs were very interesting and the vegetation greener than we thought it would be. Even the Treeless Plain was interesting - not boring at all. Perhaps we're so used to driving, but the Nullarbor was more interesting than some of the other roads we've driven along, so we were all quite happy to look around at the scenery, and the cliffs are so close by so it's quite picturesque in fact. We even saw a mangy looking dingo at one of the toilet stops.
As we passed the Nullarbor Roadhouse, we realised we were short of petrol, and had to drive about 10km further on before we could turn around, double back, refuel and get back on the road - it was about a 45 minute error! However, that gave us time to think about doing the Head of the Bight - and we were glad we took the time to drop in. We saw the Twin Rocks to the left and the Bunda Cliffs to the right - much more of the cliff area than this morning - it's truly spectacular. Eamon spotted a cute little lizard too, though no snakes much to his disappointment. We had lunch there, and tried to take in another time change - it was actually 1 ¾ hours later than our watches were set, with the west to east travel, combined with the daylight saving that SA has, but WA does not. By the time we got to Penong it was 6.30.
The road to Cactus Beach was not too bad, although Mum's laptop was on the floor of the van, and the microwave had broken away from its mountings. The Prelc's had caught up to us over the Nullarbor, and passed us on the 21km dirt road into Cactus - we were travelling quite slowly with the corrugations. So they found a great camping spot that could accommodate all of us. After a long travelling day for everyone, we enjoyed a great beach sunset, campfire, dinner & bed (at whatever time we think it was!).
