The morning was hot and sunny and with breakfast not being served until 8 we had plenty of time to sit on the roof terrace and chill before breakfast. The breakfast was excellent and our very nice host called us an uber taxi which was so efficient and cheap getting us to the airport for the last leg of our holiday.
The Flight to Port Elizabeth was quick and efficient the downside was the weather was cloudy and miserable when we arrived . The car hire was very busy but we eventually got on our way in the little red car. The weather got more miserable as we drove along which made the industrial city look even more grim. The directions we were given got us out of the city onto the motorway towards the Amakhala game park. It wasn't until we were driving along the motorway that we realised the directions we had been given didn't make much sense, so we had a quick panic that we really didn't know where we were going, on a wet miserable road in a dodgy country. Still it was a lot easier than we thought and soon found ourselves driving into the Amakhala Tented camp where we were to spend the night. It had stopped raining and was quite warm.
The game drive was going in half an hour so we quickly had a cuppa on the verandah of our tent . We were warned it gets quite cold, so much for the khaki shirt I had borrowed , fleeces were required and extra blankets on the jeep were needed to keep warm. Our game leader was Lenny who looked like Lenny Henry was very informative even if he was a little difficult to understand at times. We started by seeing a lot of different antelope and I was beginning to think that was all we were going to see. Heavy rain showers required the waterproof capes to be put on. So there we were in fleeces blankets and waterproof capes. It was not what I had imagined you wear on a game drive. We continued on and saw zebra which were quite exciting and then the highlight of the ride was a lioness sitting near the roadside and three white rhino nearby. Poachers are a problem so there is security on the park to protect this endangered species.
We stopped for wine and nibbles before encountering a large male elephant on a stroll. I was well chuffed that we had seen so much.
We returned to a lovely meal and more wine with our fellow tenters. We got back to our tent to find the electric blanket had been put on, this was luxury camping!
