We had hoped to be able to do park run in Cape Town but we had forgotten that Explore trips mean early starts and no time for other activities, so as we had to be breakfasted and ready for departure by 7.45 park run had to be abandoned.
Our destination today was the Cape peninsular south of CapeTown. The scenic coastal drive took us to Hout Bay where we embarked on a boat trip to Seal Island where a huge colony of seals have made their home. The first mistake of the day was to expect the same weather as the previous day so wearing only shorts and a thin fleece we realised we were underdressed when the hordes of tourists were there in coats and long trousers, the strong winds and rough sees added to the trip.
We were glad to warm up and return to the bus to head south to the Cape of Good Hope, the southerly tip of Africa. The whole area around the tip is a National Park with a variety of wild life including zebra. However we only encountered baboons who know that tourists mean food, but tourists are forbidden to feed them. The walk to the lighthouse at the southernmost tip is a bit of a tourist trail but has to be done and it is vey scenic with lovely white sandy beaches and crushing waves in the bays. We were booked in for lunch at the Two Oceans restaurant at the location, which had the most outstanding views and excellent food as well.
After lunch the sun had appeared, and it was time to cycle to through the park and up the coast to Simon's Town. We stopped at Cape Boulder beach to see the only African penguin colony. The hundreds of penguins living on the beach were very cute and a great tourist attraction. Wherever there are tourists there seems to be a large collection of stalls selling African souvenirs as well as African singers to entertain.
We returned to our bus for the drive back around the coast and then to CapeTown. We decided to eat locally tonight . Our leader Mike was adamant that we should only go out as a group as he seemed very safety conscious. The local area was very busy on a Saturday night but we found a very good meal at a very reasonable price, and returned to hotel as the streets were beginning to liven up.
