Up at 5am for the morning 3 hour game drive, it was going to be a long day. We got on our way on a very misty morning the low cloud was lingering in the valley. After seeing a few antelope in the mist we went up to higher grounds where there was blue sky. A mother white rhino and a young male were seen and they were fascinating to watch as the youngster never left its mothers side. A group of zebras were fighting and then turning down a track we encountered three cheetahs who were starting to devour a large Eland. Two of them were too tired to start pulling the animal, only one of them was beginning to break the skin and start ripping into the insides. It was amazing to watch this gruesome scene. This game park only allows 2 jeeps at the same location so after a while we had to leave and let others view. However we still saw water hog and then five giraffes who were majestically chomping leaves from trees.
A few more water hogs, a tortoise, ostriches and antelopes as well as host of beautiful birds were seen on the way back from a very successful game drive in lovely scenery. Breakfast was taken on the warm balcony where the hot sunshine had now dispersed the mist. We now had to pack our bags and depart for Port Elizabeth after an amazing experience.
We had a few hours to kill before our flight, so with hot sunshine it was an ideal time to head for the beach. The beaches of Port Elizabeth were on the south side of the city near the airport. Unfortunately I navigated wrongly and directed Graham through the city centre and some very dodgy areas. We eventually got to beautiful beach areas and some time enjoying watching the surfers and exploring the Boardwalk area , a very smart entertainment area. A stop for a bite at a beachside cafe was abandoned when after forty minutes there was no sign of food. So we nipped into a shop for a sandwich which took to the beach to eat. We then had to put on shoes and trousers to face the temperature shock which will no doubt encounter tomorrow morning.
The flight home was uneventful and we arrived on Wednesday morning slightly ahead of schedule and as predicted the cold temperature at Heathrow was a bit of a shock .
The whole South African experience had been wonderful, the scenery, the cycling, the food and accommodation, the lovely people we met all added to a great experience. The amount of animals and lovey flowers we saw even before the game park made the trip very special. The most lasting memory will be of cheetahs eating their kill, the vast townships which surround every city and town and the security that every house is surrounded by.
A country of such extremes, wealth and poverty, beauty and ugliness, generosity and crime and sadly the contrasts between white and black, which is sadly still very obvious. An experience and a wonderful holiday , now I have come home to another big contrast the temperature yesterday and today- it's flipping cold here!
