Great breakfast at the motel - cereal, orange juice, apple juice, coffee, bagel with cream cheese, and for the road we took an apple, banana, muffin and apple Danish. Didn't need any lunch.
It was a long 3 and a half hour drive, through really harsh landscape to get to Las Vegas. Very different to any other drives in other countries we've been too. Arid dry land with rocky mountains, then perfectly flat land which I think is old lake beds. We drove past the Mojave desert too. There was a pretty bad sand storm that I could see in the distance.
We came over the brow of this hill, and I could seethe road was perfectly straight for miles. 14 miles actually.
And now we're in Vegas baby!!
We drove along the highway with all the main casino strip on the right, and could see all the crazy different building like the Luxor Pyramid and the Statue of Liberty at New York, as well as all the plush looking hotels.
The exit off the highway took us straight to our home for the next 3 nights, the Stratosphere! Thankfully, no hostel, but instead and proper hotel bedroom. And what a price we got it for, £21 a night from DHR.com. We had to pay £5 a day per room for resort fees when we got there though, which is what most hotels do. A bit cheeky I think, but it's still really cheap.
And what a room we had. It was huge, with a huge bed, big TV...nice!
We had a little look around the casino. Lots of people looking a but brain dead pressing one single button over and over again. It's big inside though, lots of fancy looking slot machines with bright flashing lights and screens above show the jackpot, $2,000, $10,000, $500,000...
We were on our way out of the casino when this woman collared us. Basically, we took up this offer of getting free tickets to a show (choice from Phantom, Vegas! Show and others) plus a reward like $25 cash, to spend 2 and a half hours viewing holiday apartments. We had to put $40 deposit down to ensure we actually went through with it, and that's it. Sounds way too good to be true, so we'll see what happens when we come back tomorrow at 8.45am.
On the way to Vegas, the car started beeping and a message said that and oil change is needed. So, We had to take the car to Alamo at Vegas Airport. We drove in and they sorted us out now problem. Plus we got an upgrade. I started driving this big Mazda 3 off, then saw a few more cars being brought back after being cleaning and decided to get one of those. Ended up with a brand new Hyundai Elan?!?!?!? with only 100 miles on the clock. And now we have a huge boot so don't have to mess around trying to fit the bags in all the time now. Even better, we got a full tank of petrol for free, so that'll save us at least $50.
By the time we got sorted it was dark, so we drove down the strip, which was all lit up with flashing lights. It's absolutely unbelievable. The hotels are so extravagant and huge. I had to try drive whilst being distracted by it all.
For tea, we decided to go to In-N-Out Burger. We noticed it was rated as the number 1 restaurant in LA on tripadvisor when we were there, so had to try it! It's a burger chain, but it's so nice. It's very very simple. There's 3 choices, hamburger, cheeseburger or double cheeseburger, with fries and a soft drink or milkshake. Plus it's cheap. It's really popular as well. We went to one of the stores and the queues were ridiculous, so had to find another one.
After filling up on burgers, we went back to the hotel and took our bags to our room, trotting through the casino with our backpacks on! Never been stared at so much in our lives.
Another bonus about staying at the Stratosphere is we get free tickets to go up the tower, saving $14 (£9) each. The views were pretty good of Las Vegas up there. Only thing is, it's right at the top of the strip away from the main hotels and casinos, so we didn't really have a good view of the main hotels on the strip. Still good though. There's a few rides up there too that dangle people off the edge and stuff. Looked pretty good but we didn't bother.
