Friday we went sand boarding in the desert at 9:30, Ben chose to do stand up boarding, similar to snow boarding and Laura chose lie down. The sand dunes were very high and Laura had to go down on a piece of Plywood! It was very fun, Laura and Ling went tandem and had a complete wipe out leaving us covered in sand! Ben went off a jump on his board and after we all raced on the lie down boards, the instructor used a speed gun so we could see how fast we got, Bens fastest was 77kph and Laura 59kph, we have a video and photos from our time on the dunes.

At 14:30 we headed back out on the dunes on quad bikes, Ben had great fun and got loads of footage on his go pro, Laura took a more leisurely scenic route. Its fair to say that we were all shattered after an exciting day following a 3am bed time so we all hit the sack at 21:30!!

Saturday we were off at 7:00 for a 'township tour', we noticed quickly that there were quite a lot of men just waiting on the side of the road and were told that the unemployment rate in Namibia is 51% therefore these men were just waiting in the hope that someone would need a labourer today so would stop to pick them up. We visited the Damar community and met the Chief, a 89 year old lady, she settles any civil issues within the community. We learnt that if you steal a cow in Namibia you would get a 25yrs prison sentence! After speaking with the chief we went to a pub within the community and were served Mopani Worms, they were so chewy and salty...yuk! After, a few members of a local singing group preformed for us.

We left Swakopmund just before lunch and headed further into the Namib desert to our next camp, on route we crossed the Tropic of Capricorn so had photos by the sign, at camp a few people went off on a desert walk looking for snakes and scorpians however we just chilled at camp, played cards and jungle speed and Laura finished reading Silver Linings Play Book. We spent the night sleeping under the amazing stars, listening to zebras and hoping the scorpians and snakes would stay away!

Sunday...HAPPY BIRTHDAY TERRY!...we set off at 7:00 to head even further into the Namib desert. On route we stopped off at a small town called Solitaire, they had a board which showed their rainfall, its only rained 7 times this year and the last time was March - so hard to imagine! We had the shortest drive yet and arrived at camp at 10:00! We set up our tents then headed out to Sesriem Canyon, a dried up river bed which was cool. We had Nachos for lunch, Ben helped to make delicious guacamole! At 14:00 we took a trip into the desert, we walked to a salt pan and after we hiked up a sand dune called dune45 we relaxedmessed around at the top with the amazing views until sunset...beautiful!!!

Monday we set off at 7:00 for our longest drive to Fish River Canyon, a 7hr drive. As soon as we arrived at camp we cooled off in the pool until 16:00 when we set off to see the canyon. The Fish River Canyon is the second largest canyon in the world, it was just like the grand canyon just not as red or big. We walked from one view point to another and when we arrived at the second Colleen and Lezinda had set up a surprise buffet of cheese and wines for us, we ate and drank and watched the sunset over the canyon, it was very pretty. When we got back to camp we played flunky ball and jungle speed then spent another night under the stars. Tomorrow we leave beautiful Namibia and enter RSA!
