Sunday we set off at 6:30 from our lovely hotel in Windhoek. Everyone was tired from our night out the night before, we went to a restaurant called 'Joes' and tried game meat, we both had a skewer that had chunks of crocodile, zebra, kudu, oryx and springbok! Bens favourite was Zebra and Laura's Crocodile. The restaurants house wine was jagermiester! It was a good night and we got to meet our new team members, Leanne from Australia, Frenzy from Germany and Tamara & vanessa from London however they both went to Bristol UWE. After our hotel breakfast we hit the road and headed to the Waterberg Plateau. Laura finally finished reading Life of Pi yesterday (yes!) and is now on the hunt for a new read. We arrived at our camp site at the Waterberg Plateau at lunch time, there is baboons and warthog in the campsite, we ate lunch then chilled by the pool. At 16:00 we took a hike to the top of the Plateau so see the beautiful views. When we got back to camp Ben lit a fire, everyone was impressed with his skills and he was told that African men are only compatible for a wife if they can make a fire! Laura got 'iced', a game we have been playing where people hide smirnoff ice and if you find one you have to down it on one knee, I found one in the hammock! Ben hid one in the dishes which Mary found and shane hid one in the salad!!! We had lasagne for dinner which was yummy - its amazing how they are making such good food on a fire!
Monday we set off at 7:00 to head to Etosha National Park. We had lunch and a dip in the pool then went on a game drive at 16:00...we finally saw rhinos!!! The ground here is a very light dust so all elephants looked like ghosts or concrete statues. Our camp has a watering hole right next to it so after dinner we headed down to watch, we saw elephants, jackals, giraffe and a lion drinking.
Tuesday we headed off at 6:30 for a game drive where we saw lots of animals, Etosha National Park has lots of natural and man made watering holes so here we got to see lots of animals gathered together in one area. We headed back to camp for lunch and to escape the afternoon heat by the pool then went out for another short game drive at 16:00. We were back at camp in time for sunset so watched the sun go down by the camp watering hole, after sunset elephants, giraffe, rhinos and a lion come to drink. The whole night we were awoken by the lion roaring-Very cool!
Wednesday we left Etosha at 7:00 and headed to Damarland. We arrived at lunch time so ate then headed to a lodge nearby to use their pool. At 16:00 we went to Twyfelfontein, a world heritage site, to look at rock paintings that were done thousands of years ago, it was fun trying to figure out what they meant. After diner Coleen took us on a scorpian hunt around the camp site with a UV torch as scorpians contain a chemical which shows under the light - Ben found this very cool!
Thursday we set off at 6:30 to drive to Swakopmund, tourist central for the Namib desert. On route we stopped off to see the herers people and the himba people who dress completely different, one tribe the women wear long colourful Victorian style dresses and the other wear animal skin like a mini skirt. We also stopped at a shipwreck, Lezinda said if anyone stayed in the sea for 30 seconds she would buy them 5 jagers...Ben , Shane and Adrienne all went in, when they came out we saw a school of dolphins swim past! When we arrived in Swakopmund we booked the activities we want to do here, so its sand dune boarding and quad biking tomorrow! We went for lunch and had a look around town, tonight we are going on a night out which should be lots of fun!
