First we have to apologies for the delay and the length of our blog, we have been out of WiFi since Zanzibar.
Wednesday we set off at 6 from our hotel to catch the ferry back to Dar Es Salaam. It was a horrible ferry ride, very wavy and lots of people being sick. We met back up with Patrick and our truck then headed to our camp site for the night in Mikumi passing through the National Park. We saw about 5 animals so agreed it had to be the worst national park ever! We also insisted that we saw a Rhino but John argues it was just a buffalo! It was a very long day travelling and we were very tired when we reach camp. We played guess who at the bar with Ling....she is one of those annoying people who always wins HAHA!
Thursday we had a bit of a lie in and set off at 8 to continue our journey south towards Malawi. We stopped off at some shops and secretly bought Ling some presents as it was her birthday! Ling let Laura borrow her kindle to read the well recommended 'Gone Girl'. We stopped a few times on our journey to take photos then headed on to our Eco camp in Iringa which was famous for its coffee with alcohol in, we shared a hot chocolate with alcohol in which tasted like bombadinis!!!
Friday was an early start as we had to head to the Malawi border. Our entry again was very smooth as already purchased visa. Not long after we entered we could see the lake...huge! We set up camp at a campsite on the lake, Laura didn't like this camp site as lots of frogs! We went to bed at 20:30!!!
Saturday everyone planned to wake up to see the sunrise but that didn't happen! Instead we were all up about 6:30, an hour too late! We were back on our truck and travelling further down the lake to another camp where we would stay 2 nights. On route we stopped to take photos of the view of Lake Malawi from a view point up hill where lots of children came to greet us, a great opportunity to hand out pencils, water bottles, biscuits and sweets which they loved! We also gave some of our clothes we used for Kilimanjaro but no longer needed to local men and women walking past. We also stopped where there was loads of rubber trees (who knew rubbber came from trees!?) and a local guy showed us how they drain the rubber sap and how they make rubber balls, so Patrick bought a ball for us. We arrived at Kande Beach, set up camp, had dinner, sunk the 1.5 litre rose wine Laura bought from the supermarket earlier that day, hit the bar and had an amazing night dancing away on the bar!!!
Sunday most people were late for breakfast due to the night before. A group of us walked along the beach to a fishing village, there wasn't much going on as most people attend church on Sundays and children go to Sunday school but it was cool looking at their boats, they were so narrow none of us could fit in them! We spent the afternoon sunbathing on the beach, Laura finished reading Gone Girl and loved it (bringing her total adult books read to 3! Yippee!) then after dinner everyone had a early night.
Monday we set off at 8:00 for a short drive to another camp site further down the lake - Senga Bay. Laura started another book 'Life Of Pi'. At camp we set up our tents, it was difficult picking a spot as there were ants everywhere! We spent the afternoon sunbathing, playing football, volleyball and swimming in the lake. After dinner we went to bed as the campsite was quite basic so not a lot to do.
Tuesday we got up from an awfuls nights sleep, woke with thousands on ants in our tent in the early hours...horrid. Ben and Laura both sulking over breakfast!!! After breakfast we hand fed baboons bread which cheered us up! Today we were leaving Malawi and going to Zambia. Just before the border we stopped for lunch, a few kids came over so they were given toys and sweets, before we knew it the whole village arrived asking for food! The border crossing again was easy and it is becoming regular now that our tempatures are being taken to rule out Ebola... Which is good. We set up camp in Chipata and had an early night (20:00!) as it was a early start and long drive the next day.
Wednesday we set off at 5:00...ugh. It was a very long drive, very bumpy so not much sleep was had. We stopped off at a shopping complex on route to resupply ourselves with water....and KFC. Then set up camp in Lusaka, our camp was also home to zebras and giraffes.
Thursday we set off at 6:00 for our last leg of driving to Livingstone, home of Victoria Falls. We stopped off for lunch and it was so hot - 35°!!!!! We were very relieved when we got to camp....spending 4 nights here and it is beautiful!
