Wednesday, we all woke very tired, we had been woken at 3:00am by others coming home from KTV, poor Llewelyn was very sick so we nursed him for a couple of hours, finally went back to sleep properly around 5:30 then the alarm was off at 7:00! We gathered all our stuff and made for the train station, Ben was very good and carried Llewelyns bag for him, we took the bullet train for about 8 hours to Fujian and met our lovely guide Miranda. We hopped on the minibuses to head to our accommodation, stopping off for some dinner on route, then continued on to the roundhouse where we were to spend the night, we were shattered when we got there, it was dark and appeared to be in the middle of nowhere so we went to bed.
Thursday, We woke in our big roundhouse which was fun being in a such a communal living environment, the area was a lot more magnificent in day light and we are surrounded by tea fields! A roundhouse is a large, circular, enclosed and fortified building, with very thick load-bearing rammed earth walls between three and five stories high and housing up to 80 families. Smaller interior buildings are often enclosed by these huge walls which can contain halls, storehouses, wells and living areas, the whole structure resembling a small fortified city. We packed our bags and headed to a village down the road where we were to spend the rest of our time here, we were greeted with breakfast and after we set off on a tour of the other local Hakka Minority Roundhouses. We visited the Tianluokeng Tulou cluster which contains 4 roundhouse and one in the centre but a square shape, all built in 1930's and each is 3 stories high with on average 30 rooms on each level. In one round house Miranda organised for us to take part in a tea ceremony, we sat and tasted all different teas for what felt like 2 hours, Ben bought some energy tea which he liked that taste of and thought would come in handy whilst hiking EBC. It was a very hot afternoon so we walked to a local lagoon and cooled off. We had dinner then played a few games of flunky ball before joining in with the locals dancing exercise class again.
Friday, we had breakfast then hoped on our bicycles to cycle around the beautiful area and villages, the cycling was quiet tough in the heat but luckily mostly downhill, when we got to our end destination we were supposed to have lunch but some of us wanted to eat at our accommodation so headed back, Laura couldn't face riding back up those hills so got a lift whereas Ben cycled and got lost! When Ben and Victor finally found their way back we had showers, packed our bags and ate dinner before heading to the train station to catch our train to go to Macau.
