So right now I am in an internet cafe in Georgetown, on the island of Penang off the coast of Malaysia. It is pissing with rain, pardon my French, and I am stuck here.
I was supposed to be taking the train tonight to Bangkok (quite a mission, taking 21 hours) but the train got cancelled today, and the woman had no idea when it would be back up and running. Sooo needed a plan B, and most importantly finding a bed for the night! The guesthouse that the guidebook recommended was nowhere to be found, so I chose a new-ish looking one, which seems ok. The dorm only cost me about CHF 2.50 for a night. Hopefully the bedbugs aren't included.
And I am off to Bangkok tomorrow on a bus! It's going to be a loooooong trip.
I arrived at about 5.00 this morning, on the overnight train from KL. Took the ferry across and it was still dark by the time I got to the island. Since I thought I was only here for a couple of hours, I crammed in all the sights and was ready to leave by 11.30.
This place is actually pretty cool, real old Chinese shophouses filled with people at work, the town is on the small side but plenty of travellers, restaurants, cafes etc. There are a couple of incredibly ornate Chinese temples too.
But now everyone is stuck inside.
Hopefully by tomorrow I will be well on my way to Thailand!
