We escaped leech infested Khao Sok and headed by minibus, coach, ferry, coach and tul tuk to Koh Samui. We stayed in a very cheap bungalow near the beach in the quiet area of the island....not on the main resorts with all the package tourists and drunken English people. Hired a moped and cruised around the island on our 1st day there, its got alot of western themed pubs and Tescos and burger king (I didnt let Layne eat there) The beaches are quite nice but I think that we had been spoiled by the beaches we have seen in other places. Thesea was so warm in places that it wasn't a bit refreshing and was almost too hot to bother going in. We bought some alcohol in Tescos and had a few drinks on the porch of our bungalow before having a meal at the friendlist restaurant ever. It was newly opened so the owner was trying very hard to please us and was ultra friendly. The next day we decided to find some local waterfalls and as we were driving along I was day dreaming "I wonder what would happen if a tyre on the moped burst" and low and behold my idle thought was answered. We swerved a bit but didnt go flying over the handlebars like I had imagined. Mostly we were annoyed that we would have to buy a new inner tube. The waterfall was crap so we headed off to view the Grandmother and Grandfather rocks. The Grandfather rock looks like abig Piel and the Grandmother rock is a big crack with water wooshing in and out and looks like a fanjita. Lots of kids and Koreans tour groups were stood there giggling, it was pretty gross, Layne loved it! After all that excitment we just went and watched super 14s all afternoon in an Aussie themed pub. Then we went outside and had dinner in a South Afican themed pub (the steaks wern't proper SA style, no where near big enough). On our last day we went to an older quieter part of the island which was quite pretty and had an English pub where we watched some Hong Kong 7s, we then set out to find the Big Budda, which was quite easy and quite big and golden, we then decided to go and visit some more beaches for a change and almost made it to a viewpoint in the hills but once again got distracted by the South African bar and stopped to watch the hong Kong 7s, have a few beers and Layne chatted to the Afrikaans owners who comiserated me on being English. Off to Koh Tao next, cool. b
