The killing fields were pretty intense to say the least, visiting the mass graves of the Cambodian genocide, all due to one dictator imposing communism on the country. That paranoid he killed family and friends if he thought them too educated or potentially apposed communism.
When we reached the killing fields we saw a 17 level memorial which had the skulls of the victims and highlighted the method of killing indicated by marks left on the skulls, either circular holes from stabbing or caved in skulls from wooden beatings.
As we walked round the mass graves, highlighted were significant areas, one being the grave of people buried alive with the chemical DDT poured on them to finish the job off and help mask the smell of decaying bodies.
We were also taken to a large tree and told this was the baby tree.. In fact the tree where the children were stripped of their clothes and by their legs hit against the tree and thrown into the hole.
Whilst walking round the mass graves you can still find teeth, bits of bone and clothing on the ground which is crazy. A great but horrible experience.
